Xciting 250 overheating at idle with full coolant
« on: June 13, 2020, 09:34:45 PM »
Hi, brand new member with very frustrating problem. My Xciting 250 is overheating when idling for a few minutes then cooling back down when moving. The coolant is full, oil level is fine. Help!

Welcome to the forum grumbles!

I own air-cooled scoots - but I hear water cooled guys talking about fans not working and a bubble of air in the system which needs to be burped out.

Is this a recent change in your scooter?

And, I'm feeling a little peculiar.

It hasn't been ridden for two or three weeks and was definitely not having this issue before.

An update: Last night driving home the temperature reading actually swung all the way down to C while I was in Seattle's downtown tunnel, then once I got out it went back to normal. Much weird.

Fan, thermostat or both...
I recall riding in the coastal areas of the Pacific North Wet (yah, WET!) some of the frigid low spots could seem 30 degrees colder than the humps!

I'm checking the fan fuse today when I change the oil, is there anything I can do with the thermostat?

There is something besides the fuse called "EMI filter" in the fan circuit that can puke rendering the fan inop. That is, this filter is present on all EFI bikes with liquid cooling. Not sure on yours because I don't have the wiring diagram.
Fuse, fan, wiring, thermo switch for fan. Thermo switch usually in the radiator. Once you find it, bypass it to see if fan turns on and runs.
Do you have a multimeter?

Sorry for the delay. I haven't been able to find a diagram showing me where the radiator is and it's not immediately apparent to my untrained eye. Also, I checked the fuses, all are fine. I do have a multimeter in fact.

Easiest way is to run the bike at idle and see if the fan turns on. If it doesn't, repair or replace the fan.

I'd take an educated guess at just behind part 64400 on this diagram.

I ran it at idle until it overheated in my yard, I definitely did not hear a fan. Is it obvious when it's running, like a car?

Thank you very much for that, I'll take a look tomorrow.

I can hear the one on my SYM and the one on my Suzuki so I'd say that it should be audible.
Had a friend who had a 250 like yours, but i don't recall the fan specifically on it.
Usually only an issue in traffic or extended idles or climbs on anything I've had.

The time I had a similar issue on my Burgman I ended up tracing wires after checking fuses and the like.
No fun at all, but the parts cost on the fix was cheap.
There's a 10amp fuse for the fan you may want to check, make sure you have a couple spares since it may have blow for a reason...and back to wire tracing.

at this point see if you can get that cover off and get an eyeball on it.  You may get lucky and see an obvious disconnect pr obvious corrosion right at the fan or in the immediate harness.

BTW I did a google search for Xciting 250 fan repair and saw a link for a pdf off xcitingclub.com that was for the cooling system.
Download and check at your own risk of course, but when I looked it over this does cover the fan including some pics.

I've ordered a new thermostat and I definitely didn't hear anything fan-sounding but it might have been hidden by motor sound. The motor sounds as fine as it ever has, although I understand idling at 2000rpm isn't ideal/normal? That's how it's been since I've gotten it, at wide open throttle it's not uncommon for it to flirt with redlining, I don't know if that's normal either. According to various sources, one can just adjust the idle screw on the engine and reduce the RPMs when resting but there's no conclusive diagram I can find pointing out the screw in question.

Several Kymco's have a 1700+/-100 rpm idle speed. 2000 shouldn't harm anything. The idle speed screw should be on the throttle body where the throttle cable wraps around the butterfly valve pulley. The screw is an adjustable throttle stop.
