2014 UXV 700i Cutting out in High RPMS
« on: July 22, 2020, 09:33:58 PM »
We have a 2014 700i that when we have it pinned (around 42-45 mph), it cuts out. It hasn't always done that, it has recently started. We have cleaned the carburetor, done the maintenance (cleaning filters, oil change, etc) and it is still cutting out. I have heard about a rev limiter, the manual in cyclepedia.com does not indicate where the rev limiter is. Can anyone tell us where this is and provide any additional ideas on what to troubleshoot?

Super frustrated, few people in our area will service Kymco anymore because Kymco is hard to get parts from, etc. Thank you for your help!!!

What do you mean by cutting out? Shutting off, or just losing power? My UXV 450 has a rev limiter, and once you hit 45 mph, you can feel it continually throttle back if you keep the accelerator pinned as it reaches the rev limit, pulls back and then hits the limit again.

Rev limiting is in the ECU. Not a separate unit.

It does not shut off, it isn't really loosing power, it is more like a interruption in the rpms... it cuts out. Not sure how else to explain it. It hasn't always done this, it just recently started. If it was a issue with the rev limiter wouldn't this always have been a problem?

What are you are describing definitely sounds like the rev limiter. Is it like a pulsing of power back and forth, like it reaches a certain level, then cuts out momentarily, then reaches that level again and cuts out momentarily, over and over? If so, that's the rev limiter, and it's what I've always had with my 450 since it was brand new. Basically, my understanding is that it's designed to protect the engine so you can't run it too hard. 45-47 mph is just top end for my machine. I suppose there could be a way to derestrict it, but I have no desire. That's plenty fast enough, and I don't want to blow the engine -- or void my warranty.

I completely agree! It’s not that we are looking at going beyond that, it’s plenty fast enough. We are just concerned if we need to have it checked out or if something is wrong, as it hasn’t always done this, it just started last hunting season. It makes sense it’s designed to protect the engine. Is it possible the rev limiter could adjust to a tad on its own?

Watch your tach and see if it xuts at the same rpm everytime, if it does it is the rev limiter.  My 350i cuts right at 7500 rpm which is factory redline.  Not sure what your redline is but sure sounds like a rev limiter.  Early on you may not have had your machine pegged, if heading into a wind mine wont redline either.

The 700l is fuel injected not carbureted. Kymco ATV’s and SxS are speed governed to about 45 to 50 mph, not rev limited

Good to know. Practically speaking, however, the end result is the same. Machine hits speed limit and the fuel input is diminished by the injector, resulting in momentary loss of power, correct? If you keep throttle pinned, this will cycle as you hit limit, decelerate, hit limit, decelerate, etc.

According to my facrory service manual there ks a rev limiter set at 7500 rpm. My speed will vary from 45 to 49 mph, but irregardless of speed, when it hits 7500 rpm the rev limiter kicks in and keeps the engine from reving higher.  I have confirmed this with my dealer mechanic.
