Thinking about next scooter
« on: July 25, 2020, 12:45:17 PM »
Even though not much real riding going on so far this year. At 81 still thinking about next bike for next year, but the Kymco Like 150i meets my requirements, except it is not Freeway legal by the displacement rule.....but I also thought 10HP in some places also was the min.   ---Now my experience, it doesn't matter where you go in US, you are going to have to get up on Freeway---Try Chicago, coming from East heading North with no Freeway---I did, Suzuki GS500E.....what a way to waste a day!

I realize I use my bike differently that most people here----don't hesitate to make run to AK/Quebec, etc.

Which brings me to costs----Motel days total, gas/eat/sleep cost me about $100-150 a day----camping if I find free place maybe $50 a day.---of course staying home also costs money.

Important thing in my book is do it!

You are right, John! Years ago, got impressed with so many people saying, "Wished I would have done that when I was younger! Now too old!" What an epitaph! Shoulda, coulda, woulda, BUT.....

This isn't a practice run you might as well enjoy it while you can. The dirt nap awaits.  If it doesn't create financial hardship go for it.  Both my 150 People and 125 Zuma went to older people who still wanted to ride but the motorcycle was to much for them to handle. It made me proud they still enjoyed riding.

Not "hesitating" john, just found a way to ride a scooter daily while spending quality time with my first love.
Looking at Red Honda scooters.

My aunt enjoyed traveling as well. In her latter years when she was unable to travel anymore she had the memories of all her trips to relive the trips.

I agree.  This was going to be the year I took some long trips but it just hasn't turned out that way.  The year statred out rough with my dad in the hospital and then passing away early march.  A week or so later and the Corona Virus lockdowns hit.  I didn't get out and ride much until May and I don't expect to do any long trips this year.  By long trip I mean going more than one or two states away.

I'm Planning on doing more and longer trips next year.  There are still 7 states I have not ridden in yet!

The Like is freeway Legal in some states.  Here in Alabama I have no idea what is required to be legal but I have ridden on the Interstate for short distances.  In Ohio only 5 HP is required but you can get a ticket for obstructing traffic if you go to slow.  California requires over 150cc.  Every state sets its own rules.  I know people have have done long trips on bikes smaller than the Like 150i.

Here's a recent ride report on a guy who is riding cross country (MI-CA and back) on a Honda C125. https://advrider.com/f/threads/honda-c125-michigan-to-california-and-back.1456645/

My opinion interstates/freeways are boring and back roads are a lot more interesting.  Love checking out new small towns that the interstate usually bypassed years ago.  Highway 50 (America's loneliest road) comes to mind.  Smaller displacement scooters capable of 45mph would be fine on these roads.  I have taken the interstate a lot when I had to be someplace at a certain time but now the back roads are a lot more interesting/fun.

That said if I was to do a cross country trip I would at least want a 250 cc scooter  or the new 300cc Kymco.  My old Xicting 250 does great on the county roads I tend to ride.  In fact have a ROMEO RIDE  Wednesday to (Pop's diner) Peabody KS about a hour away. Mapping out the county roads I'll take today.

Agreed KK, long straight multi-lane highways are not the scooters’ natural milieu. I far prefer to select the byways and in my country, the B roads which offer scenery and experiences unavailable from main thoroughfares.

When on two wheels, it’s all about the ride, not just getting to the destination in least possible time.

With Helex I rode US 50 end to end, west to east.   Note: with goal in mind I like/use Interstates, not just for ride.

Some re-thinking----I will probably stay with Kymco as they are cheap, but good---my book it may be cheaper on long trip if big trouble, just to leave/junk/give away bike and take Bus home.  So staying with Kymco, may buy Like 200i Limited---by displacement probably 100% Freeway legal in US------Having had two new 600 Silverwings/2 new Burgman 400's, because of poor wind management, you still do most of your riding in the 50-60 mph range......unless you want to go nuts on all day rides----I ride in the 50-60 mph range with my XTown 300i, althought it will go about 80mph on the top end.

With new Like, I don't mind running wide open (warranty).   No scooters, are going to run high speed as safely as my K BMW period!

Also Like 200, may be able to come up with windshield combo that can be BUFFET FREE like Vespas can be!
