Tach bounce?
« on: September 04, 2020, 12:40:36 AM »
Cruising about 60mph, I saw my tach bounce a few times, clear up over 9K for a second or two. Is it on the way out? Common problem? Expensive fix? Xciting 500R, 2010 with 24K on it.

I wouldn’t worry too much just yet. It could be a bit of moisture in the electrical connector behind the dash. Then again it could be a wire starting to break down between the headset and the coil (I think that’s where the tacho gets it’s feed from)

Whilst it’s working generally ok, on a scoot of that age I wouldn’t fret as you’re likely going to get a few foibles.

I have an intermittent issue with the left hand bulb on my instrument binnacle deciding whether it wants to work or not. I’ll deal with it next time I have the cowl off.  I’d recommend you adopt a similar approach and when next you have occasion to whip your cowl off, have the instrument connector  off and give it a good squirt of WD or Wurth.

If it’s sporadic, diagnosis is going to be difficult as the Law of Sodde will probably guarantee that if you get a multimeter on the wiring, all will be appear fine.

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it or you’ll fix it ‘til it’s broke.

Thanks, guys. I just thought it was weird that the tach reading jumped to the high side. If it quit entirely I would be a while getting in there. My speedo tells me everything, anyway.
