How to Remove Handlebar Rear Cover for People 50S 4T?
« on: September 19, 2020, 05:48:39 PM »
Hi...I can't figure out how to separate (remove the rear handlebar cover) the front and rear handlebar covers in order to get to the master cylinder.  Manual says to remove windshield and 4 screws and 2 bolts.  All done but i still can't separate the bottom quarter of the covers.  What have i missed?

Thanx!

I'm assuming that your People S 50 is the same as my S 200. The most difficult thing to do on the scoot is separating and removing the front (headlight and speedo) covers. I just did this about a week or 2 ago and no matter how many times I do it it doesn't seem to get any easier. Heck, i can strip the seat, tub and rear bodywork completely off in about 10 minutes, but the front cover takes me a lot longer.

The hard part is separating the cover at the 2 bolts in the sides. In the picture I attached the front of the scooter is to the right. After you remove the 4 screws you then do the 2 bolts. (this assumes you also unbolted the 2 turn signals. I put each one in a sock and then let it dangle so it doesn't scratch up the front of the scoot). You have to pull out very firmly on the front part of the cover to clear the mounting hole. With the front cover pulled out you then pull out on the rear cover equally as hard to clear the mounting hole.

the 2 covers are attached together with some tabs around the perimete of both covers. It is easy to separate these.

I have started putting painters tape on the bodywork right below the speedometer cover and above where the key goes. It is very easy to scratch the crap out of this area while trying to separate the 2 covers.

So you just keep working at it, pulling both covers out. You can partially separate the covers above the speedometer before you start fighting with the side bolts. Sometimes it feels like you're going to break them but they are very tough.

The second pic I attached is from 2 weeks ago with the covers separated. You can see the painters tape and the socks covering the dangling turn signals.

Be prepared to possibly chew up the covers a little bit above the side bolts while you're trying to pry them apart. i used some plastic pry/trim removal tools to help coax them apart.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Thanks, Iahawk!  That was exactly what i needed to understand how the front and rear covers were attached and how to separate them---eventually.  I would have never figured this out on my own or using the manual.  Still a pita, but do-able.

The only thing i'd add is that you don't actually have to remove either the front or rear cover to change brake fluid.  Just separate them ("just") and loosen the three 10mm nuts holding the front handlebar cover enough to access the master cylinder cover.  Btw, it's easy to misalign a turn signal and not be able to screw the front and rear covers together.

Anyhow, thank a bunch.

garicao, glad I was able to help!  Nice to know there are more S200s (or S50s) still running around.
