But It's not a Kymco
« on: December 19, 2020, 05:31:39 PM »
I have been looking for a 50cc scooter for some friends to ride that do not have a license or experience riding. Have found a few Kymco's but they were either in poor condition or excellent condition without a title. I found a Piaggio Fly 4t in Wichita in mint condition with 900 miles on it. Made the deal and will pick it up Monday.  Unfortunately this wasn't a extraordinary bargin but a fair price.  Kind of funny to be buying a scooter I will probably never ride.

Now after reading about what Stig wrote about a Piaggio rider having his gear case fail and being locked out I wonder about reliability.  Oh well done made the deal so will follow through. I don't understand calling it a fly since it certainly isn't light weight for a 50cc.

I wouldn't be too concerned about your Fly.
What you don't know about my Liberty owner is that he rode it double into a massive sharp-edged pothole (which probably broke rear seals), then dumped it later hard enough to injure his wife
....which might have unsettled the antenna for the smart key system.
In short, his mechanic could tell some stories about this scooter - even if the owner won't 😊

And, I'm feeling a little peculiar.

Fly 50 is a common scooter here in Finland. Usually for older people, when there is no rush. Piaggio Vespa 50 is premium, Fly is worth money with 30 % and above less priced. Comparing Kymco, less than Agility 50 and almost equal with Like 50 priced.
Heavy, so good to drive. 4T lazy, some say. When used normally with service, easily over 20 tkm/ ten years. No weak points with variator or electricity or whatsoever, that is what you asked.
2 valve motor is ok, 4 valve motors have had troubles with valves timing in some cases. Timing does not last.
I would go for 4T 2v Fly anytime. Reliable, quiet, low gasoline, enough big for driving 100 km or more in one time, and does the job easily. Also in wintertime, when serviced as manual says.
When sold here, version is restricted to 45 kmh moped.

Thanks Stig for the clarification, feel a little better about my purchase. Thanks Like 50 for your knowledge as well because I know zip about Piaggio.  The thing looks showroom fresh from the pictures and now has 1100 miles on it.

I would never have thought about buying a 50cc machine but know a few people without a motorcycle license and lack experience. I might have to ride it downtown to my favorite Italian restaurant.

our local scooter shop carries Wolf, Piaggio and Vespa. They have a youtube video (linked below) where they recommend the Wolf for pure entry level scooting and for 14 and 15 year olds...the Piaggio Typhoon 50 for solid, long term college use...and the Vespa for a lifetime scooter. The Piaggio looks very nice.

On reading the Kansas law this Piaggio fly  might have to be classified as a motorcycle which defeats my whole purpose of purchasing it. Under law it can't have more then 3.5 hp this has  4.3 hp and can't do more then 30 mph and this is rated to do 39mph or 62kph .

Might have to do the Stig thing and bring a box of donuts to the tag dept. ;)

This is the 4 valve engine. Is it just valve adjustment or mechanical issues?  My understanding is the 2 valve is 3.5 hp and the 4 valve is 4.3 hp.

There is a dealer in Ceder Falls Iowa that has leftover 2020  Kymco Agaility's advertised for $1299.  Thought about picking one of those up but this Fly 50 came up and was super clean. I will pick the Fly up Monday morning.  Just found out Wichita has a Vespa/Piaggio dealer.

Few guys, who has pro service history, told on national scooterside, that 50 cc 4 valve needs valve check every 3000 km, and short oil change. Manual from factory that they used during years, was first telling 12 tkm check valves, chanced to every 6 tkm, and the pro mechanics keep telling 3000 km as said.
So the adjustment doesnt last. And when its get cold weather, like + 5 c or below, the valve goes too near to zero point, so it can not start.
They, Piaggio, have 2v, 3v and 4v  50cc motors made, for some reasons, some say for some troubles.
So, careful valve check and trim often with oil change, then there will be no troubles.

Your right about the fleet, I've got way to many.  Another year of Covid and I will have to get another building or actually start thinning the herd. I will get some pictures out.
