did you get to see the Christmas Star?
« on: December 23, 2020, 01:16:32 AM »
Sky finally cleared here so that we could see the Christmas Star in the SW sky just as predicted.
This planetary conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn is pretty cool to see.

We walked down to the corner and saw it over the neighbor's house.

Cleaning the lights and getting the  LIKE gassed up for tomorrow's coffee outing. Plan to leave especially early to get some photos before snow and very cold temps move in.

And, I'm feeling a little peculiar.

glad you saw it. I remembered a few hours too late and by that time we'd missed it...oh, well, it will be back again in what, another few hundred years?

Nope, sadly it was just too cloudy and rainy at this side of the pond
- but I guess this is the “star” which will stay in my and my family’s hearts for ever !

probably a silly question...but i always assumed the Southern Hemisphere had a very different night sky than the Northern hemisphere...so I did a quick search and read that we have some overlap of our skies along with unique areas, too.

For example, in the Southern hemisphere the Big Dipper (or the Plough to our British friends) is visible only North of 25 degrees latitude South (Northern half of Australia, for example)..and it appears upside down to them vs our view!

And the Southern version of our North Star is the Southern Cross...which is visible in the US only from the Florida Keys or Hawaii!
