Anyone have a scooter or motorcycle tire fail while riding?
« on: March 29, 2021, 01:37:35 AM »
No, not talking about a flat from a cut or a puncture.
Asking about experiencing a tire failure while riding...blow out, tread separation, side-wall failure, etc., etc.?? I frequently see discussions about the dangers of riding on tires which display visible cracks in the tire from age, air pollution,  sun damage, etc.
Asking for reports from someone who has actually experienced a tire failure from 'cracks'?

And, I'm feeling a little peculiar.

Yes---Japan Helix (Fusion there) tire lost tread---did not go down---at end of high speed freeway run---remember, tires OEM on Helix rear J rated--62mph on bike that would go 70mph plus downhill/tail wind and number #2---US new Honda ReFlex rear tread  came loose---stopped before more trouble.---Both times Bridgestone---  In US, Bridgestone replaced tire.   On Helix (had 4 new ones) questioned Honda on putting 62mph tire on bike that would go faster than that---really no answer that made sense-  Helix, Japan version felt faster than US models.

Further Guzzi V-7, Pirelli tires--Minneapolis, rush hour, S curve--spike in rear tire---high speed, ended up in field, no damage to me or bike.  Tire junk.

Something to remember, outer tire crscked inner carcass the holds air way still be ok.  My take---fresh tires may allow you to live longer!

While a lot of us never had a tire failure  (on a bike) a lot of that might be preventive maintenance.   I know I change my tires due to age even if the tires don't show sign of age.

John G were the tires that failed due to age or poor tire construction?
In parts 200S and Grand Vista and my motorcycles 2 CS BMW'S and one GS BMW.

Sold-32 Kymco scooters of various sizes this summer.

No.  The only tyres I have ever had that failed me were down to punctures.  Even then the result is not very dramatic, in one notable case I did nearly a hundred autoroute miles to reach a ferry booking with the nail in place!
Regards & ride safe,
Neil
