Muffler wearing out

Is there any repair for muffler getting louder every day. I have a 2006 p 250 with 28,000 km on it and the muffler acts and sounds like something has blown out. I really don't want to spend 200 plus dollars buying a new one. Can the muffler be taken apart and repaired? Thanks for any advice.

In theory, yes. The issue here is - do you know somebody willing/knowing how to do that?

Did you check the exhaust pipe for holes? How are the bolts going to the engine? Tight?

I have been gone for a long time . I still ride my People 250. This post caught my eye because I had the same problem. The two year warranty was not up so Kymco replaced it free of charge. The exhaust pipe also cracked. Something to think about.

Thanks guys for your input. I removed the rear chrome cap on the muffler and sure enough there was a clean crack all the way round the exhaust outlet. Went to Wal-Mart and picked up some quick steel and now back in business.

Did it make more noise if you gave it more throttle?  Did it make a banging sound when you accelerated and when you were riding at highway speeds?  Mine does both of these and has bothered me since I picked it up at ~13,400Km.  I had a Kymco mechanic ride it and he said it was fine but it doesn't sound fine to me...

yes, it did make more noise as I accelerated but no banging at highway speed. However, my quick fix with "quick steel" lasted less than two miles so I am back at point A.

Just wondering if anyone has tried those muffler bandage type kits on a scoot? I've seen them at the auto parts store. They come with screen, tape, bonding, etc. I have no idea if they would be successful even for a temporary fix until a replacement pipe could be ordered or an existing one could be fixed under warranty. I have wondered, though, since I imagine the sudden increase in noise could be annoying for some folks.

I tried the muffler bandage, it lasted about 100 miles or an hour...not sure, I was going 80 miles an hour and could not hear it. Mine completely failed in the middle of my 800 mile weekend rally ride from Sacrmento to San Luis Obispo.  There was no way I was going home.  The downpipe failed at about mile 65 into my weekend trip.

I bought a patch kit, a soda can, bailing wire, 4 hose clamps and I patched it in the parking lot of the auto supply store.  The patch warmed up and melted on like it was supposed to. FYI...IT STINKS!!!

The patch failed before the next gas stop but the engine did not get hot, the engine ran fine, the oil pressure was fine. I was able to move it back over the hole and tighten up the hose clamps over the hole and it quieted up.  I gassed up, watered up, used the head and ate some food and motored on to the next fuel stop and lunch. When we stopped for gas and meet up with the rest of the riding party, the patch had moved again and I was done fooling with it. I gassed up, watered up and rode on until lunch. This process continued until we got to SLO 380 miles from Sacramento. I made a better patch from plumbing supplies from HomeDepot but that too failed. In the end, I spent the weekend sounding like a Harley-Davidson scooter.

The ONLY solution I found with the clunking muffler and broken pipe was a new OEM muffler ordered from the dealer. There are NO secondary market mufflers for a vintage style P250.
