AK 550
« on: December 06, 2020, 03:02:20 PM »
So I bought a AK550 from Fun Bike Center in San Diego. They made the purchase easy. The dealer took good care of me without a ton of B.S. I have owned Mana’s, Vespa, Burgers, Tmax, MP3’s and BMW scooters. I find this AK550 to be as nice or nicer then any of the ones mentioned. The bike has the stiffness of the chassis like the Tmax. It has storage as good as my 650 sport. The motor has more character then any of the other maxi’s I have owned. Acceleration is fantastic for a 550 CVT bike.  The bike is comfortable. The fairing is just right for me. I do not like the giant bulbous fairings on most scooters. I am protected from the cold but get enough wind to not overheat. The heated grips are fantastic. The fit and finish is good. The exhaust sound is nice. It sounds like a proper motorcycle. I think an aftermarket exhaust would probably just enhance the exhaust sound.  The bike handles very good. I own a Street triple, and a Thruxton as well. I could keep up with either bike in the twisties. I have not topped it out but I expect it will go plenty fast. The brakes are amazing for a scooter. It is a great machine. It also has lots of tech but I need to own it longer before I comment. I have the Space grey color. I had to move the wind screen up one notch to reduce wind noise. It was done with tools and it is easy enough. I am 5’9”. Anyway the AK550 is available and in the USA.

Hey,Zeus - thanks for your thoughts on the new scoot!  Lots of new and used choices in 2 wheelers in that $9K-$10K price range the 550 lives in. What made you decide on the new Kymco scoot ? Do you always have a scooter in your stable along with your bikes?

Yes I usually have a scooter or two in my stable. I also have a Vespa 300 as well as the motorcycles. The 300 is a good run about. Easy ride no drama. The AK550 is a great all around machine. I just did a nice twisty run up and around some of San Diego’s great roads. Some sport bike group actually slowed me down. The 550 is a great handling bike. I get tired of scooters if they  don’t have some power and handle well. The AK is probably the best of the ones I’ve owned. The BMW sport was close. The Tmax I had was good but it was a 09. It needed some tuning to get more fun out of it. The scooter allows me to ride longer and have less fatigue then the motorcycles. I have injuries that make any long days on a bike tough.

HeyZeus! Good report! I rode my 1960 Honda Hawk to Palomar Observatory and Julian in '60 to '62! I hear Julian still has great apple pie! You can also ride out past Otay Lakes to the skydiving center just short of Pio Pico. That is not such a great road anymore with all the population out there.
Your report almost makes my mouth water to look at the AK! Check in often with updates!

And this forum has a 1024  kb or something limit on the data size, too! You have to resize, compress or some other geek magic to get 'em on here at all.

HeyZeus, I really wish you hadn’t posted this review!  Just as I was thinking I can’t justify trading in my X-Town for a 550...

I hear ya, hang in there. COVID has messed our world up. I was afraid to part with the money but I figured either I spend it or my politicians would figure a way to take it.

I saw their (FBC) AK550 on cycletrader. It was a bit far for me to check out. There was another listed in Bellflower, but it was gone when I went to look at it. Continuing reviews are appreciated.

Hey Zeus, FBC just got their first two at the end of August 2021, and I bought one. When did you buy yours? Thanks
