How Many Miles From A Well Maintained Kymco?
« on: October 20, 2021, 11:54:05 PM »
My Kymco 250 has about 20000 miles on it. How many more miles can I be expected to get without sinking a ton of money into it?

I just hit 4,400 Km on mine and havent had any real issues yet. It really depends on how well you take care of it. There are many fourms about this, Just type in Lifespan in the search bar.

How old is your Kymco 250?

150, 250, 550 cc. Really shouldn't matter a lot. I've known small scooters to go over 100,000 miles. Granted, there is a lot of maintenance done at the higher end of those miles but that's not unachievable. The bigger scooters and motorcycles are known to go over 150,000 miles. Some without major issues. And I've known personally the riders who have done that. No real difference if a scooter or standard motorcycle in most sizes if a good manufacturer and well maintained along the way.

Personally I feel anyone who only puts on less than 1000 miles per year for any bike that is capable on a highway is merely an owner. Casual riders will more likely put on over 3000 miles per year. Serious riders will easily add on 12,000+ miles per year. On smaller scooters and motorcycles that do better to stay on city streets and country lanes (50cc to 150cc, maybe slightly bigger?) you can cut those miles in half usually, maybe even less. Not everyone is a serious rider. Comparatively few compared with the number of bikes on the road really. But a great many are at least casual riders.

I would say if well maintained your 250 should manage many many more times the miles you currently have on it. But this is all just my opinion.

I got 80,000km out of my Downtown 300 but it was hit twice by cars before 50,000km and slowly fell apart after that (plastics are expensive). If you don't have unexpected issues and do regular servicing then expect that much or more.

I m expecting between 12 500 miles (20tkm) - 19 000 miles (30tkm) from my Like50 fourstroke, y2012 now 4600 miles (7400 km) driven. During that its once carefully enough repaird from slighly fall due van hit, serviced well like synthetic motor oil every 600 miles (1000 km), belts and rollers etc what comes ahead. Not that much use in wintertime to avoid hard conditions in use. And when less use, then gasoline is small engine gas for fourstroke, that will not cause problems in carburator like the basic 98e 5% booze can and will do. Basic sence and careness, lets say. Shelter from direct rain.
Lets see what happends, yearly speed can be like 3000 - 4000 miles approx.
My recommends to Kymco, built to last with reasonable price, basicly, I would say.

i put 50,000 miles on my 07 Yamaha Majesty (in a couple years) and the only things that ever went wrong were (i believe) my fault and not the bike...

Water pump seal failed at about 25,000 miles because the coolant had never been changed in 12 years...Clutch shoes wore out at about 40,000 because i never changed/cleaned the clutch air filter...Regulator/rectifier took a crap because i was using my scooter to jump my sisters car during the ice storm we had last year and had the car and the bike running when i did...

i think thats it

OH and the stator went bad...really not sure why that one failed...might have also been from improper jumps. I never knew you shouldnt have the car running when you jump a bike...

None of those repairs were very expensive at all. I think the stator was the most expensive. Couple hundred bucks

Im not counting the clutch though because i installed a malossi and some dr pulley sliders so im calling it an upgrade as much as a repair cost :P

I guess my steering head bearings went bad too...developed an indent. Didnt really need fixed, it was just annoying. That was only like $30 for all balls bearings replacement. (SUPER pain in the arse to do though...i was glad to be done with that). But im also not blaming the bike for that one...i hit a LOT of bumps

In summation...if you arent afraid to throw a wrench at them...seems like they can keep going about forever without swallowing up TOO much money :D

Can’t vouch for ultimate mileage possibilities, but guessing a well maintained engine ought to be capable of c75,000 miles?

My main reason in adding to this thread was just to observe that my own X-Town 300 only seems to be running better and better the more miles get onto its bore!  I now get better mpg, power and smoother delivery after 5,000 miles and suspect the engine is now at (or approaching) a fully broken in state?   Rode it this morning for a short journey without my customary earplugs and have to say it still sounded very smooth!

My XTown 300i was my 11th new maxiscooter---now gone---but I am sure it would have made it to the 50,000 miles I usually trade at.  Any brand at 50,000 miles...I just do not like monkeying with old/older bike.   Moving now into non Kymco territory, so will buy  Honda.

I think John may have mused about getting a C125 in one of his posts Stig?
