So, fondling the muffler to warm my finger tips.

Native Americans had mufflers back in old days?
Or were you referring to those from India? Didn't know they had mufflers either except more recently on their scooters that now proliferate all over in that country.

Oh I recall that on times too numerous to count back in my commuting days with no heated grips. My secret weapon in the worst of the winter were leather ski mittens. Still got frost bitten thumbs, but at least my fingers were warm!

Decades ago an Army Sgt. told me best way to keep hands warm was to layer like this:
Silk glove
Wool glove
Leather glove

I remembered that advice and tried it.
Hands still got cold in 20 mins.

Started cooking my leather gloves on the muffler too often....which helped only when I stopped...
and can melt the stitching:-)
Battery gloves opened up winter riding for me!

Yes, supplementary heating is usually the only real solution.  Thick frost here this morning so I'll leave it an hour or so before I get the groceries.  Fire up the heated grips!
