RJS - I Ran my AK550 out of gas
« on: February 10, 2022, 08:46:34 PM »
Not sure what happened...think maybe i didnt have the gas cap on because i just cant think of any other reason.
Only got 165 miles out of the tank and had gotten too dependent on knowing the line...refusing to believe the indicator.

Anyway, after it ran out, i started it and ran it again just to make sure it was completely out of gas. Because i was refusing to believe it.

Useful part of the story is that we can, in fact, run the line completely dry...and it will fire up immediately once theres some gas in the tank.

I was concerned about possible priming issues with injectors or fuel pumps or whatever. But nope. Barely turned over and she popped right off :)

This is good news because all us old timers with diesel and EFI gas experience just KNEW it would be the same hassle!

I would not even think of testing my 500 to 165 miles. It wouldn't get close.

Must have a small gas tank or gets poor mpg.
Riding with temps above 60F I would expect no issues going 165 miles, or even 175 miles, before running dry. Been close to that on only 3.1 gallons. The AK tank is at least 3.3 or 3.4 gal.

Jermwars... how many gals did you fill the tank with when it was drained?

My Burgman 650 would go about that on the same amount of gas. Once or twice I ran over 200 miles, nearly 210 miles, and filled the tank with 3.8 gal in a 3.9 gal tank.

Best range I’ve hit on my X-Town 300i so far was about 180 miles. Bear in mind ours are imperial gallons not US!

My tank is barely over 3 gallons & I doubt my perfectly good running 500 ever sees an honest 50mpg. I pulled into a station running on fumes & all I got in it was 3.1 gallons. I don't know the official claim.

I got VERY close to running out of gas on the turnpike. There was about 1-2 mm of fuel in the bottom of my tank when I went to fill up. It only took 3.4 gallons all the way to the top of the neck. I carry a fuel bottle with me so I can put another .4 gallons in just for such occasions.
