a feller takes what he can get.....
« on: December 02, 2022, 12:11:37 AM »
Planning my ride for Saturday sunrise.
Catch some of that 40 degree temp before it dives into the 30's.

Some rain - and 18mph winds out of the SW which should hurry me along to my coffee ;)
Charging up two sets of 7V gloves and getting out the waterproofing for them.

The LIKE is hooked to the Battery Tender Jr. - and has a belly full of SHELL Nitro.
Tires....are.... probably fine. I'll give 'em a squeeze.
Tire repair and inflate kits are in there with my emergency Moon Pies - goodness, DO hope I don't need to use it...in the dark, and wind and rain as the bottom drops out of the temps!

It's the best looking dawn for a week or better.

Cold Air = Free Horsepower

I have to get my heated gear out.... hopefully the AK's charging system can handle the load

When I was having issues with my heated grips system, and before I bought the handlebar muffs, I was using the Battery Tender cable to run my Gerbing heated gloves and had no issues at any heat setting. I ran the Gerbing heat controller cable back out the glove box where the BT cable came in and routed it up through the hole in the handlebar cover where the throttle cables come through. And I did run those at 5 out of 5, the highest setting when I rode at zero F the first several weeks of this year. No warnings and no low battery or low voltage indications. The volt meter stayed up around 13.9-14.0 while I was running the heated gloves. Normally it would show 14.1 volts whether at idle or running full tilt down the highway. Now that I have the heated grips sorted and also have the muffs I didn't need the heated gloves any more so sold those.

If you zoom in on this picture you can see the heated gloves controller hanging on the parking brake lever and the cable from it going into the right side of the handlebar cover.

This was a very temporary setup until I settled on what I would do going forward with keeping the hands warm. I keep the rest of me warm with layers and am comfortable down below zero F.

my FG heated jacket liner is 90watts, Gerbings gloves are 35watts, hopefully, the AK can make 150 watts more than what it takes just to keep the bike running.. spark, fuel pump, lights

That concern is just one reason why I wanted to take advantage of the heated grips and use otherwise passive thermal protection (muffs).

Riding in and out of  showers this morning.  Biggest concern is watching for downed tree branches is this 20mph head wind🙃 in the pitch dark with this 35W headlight. Winds have been blowing for close to 48hrs.
Hey....I'm not freezing...so stop whining!
