High idle RPM
« on: December 20, 2010, 06:19:15 PM »
Hey again ( I know I know, so many questions! hehe)
When the scooter starts up from being cold, the RPM's are quite high... Not crazy high but high enough to make the back wheel spin slowly. After a few minutes of riding, the RPM's go down to normal RPM but if I just leave it idling it feels like it won't go down (was waiting 15 minutes and it was the same)... Then I started riding and few minutes into it, the idle went down to normal.
It doesn't bother me but I don't know if this is very good for the clutch or engine since I have to hold the break so it doesn't move me forward at red lights.

Is it just the scooter being cold and needs a better warm-up or is something wrong with it?

Other than that, the scooter is running fine... If anyone was wondering, the 2010 model does not seem to have any changes in the restrictions. I cut the wire inside the CDI box, changed the variator bushing and added some 5.5g Dr. Pulley Sliding Roller weights. The acceleration is very even and top speed on the meter seems to be somewhere between 45mph and 50mph on flats, so I guess around 40mph in real speed?

I go threw the same thing with one of my other scoots every year. I have to turn the idle screw up and make small adjustments to the carb in the cold weather.then when weather stays above 40 Ill put the carb back to normal adjustment.

From my experience, it's just a matter of warming it up enough.

The problem is that to really warm the scoot up you need to ride it for a while even after idling for several minutes.

So it doesn't sound like anything unusual to me.

So I shouldn't be worried about the engine or anything then?

If the RPMs are dropping down to normal once the engine is warm then I wouldn't worry about it.

If they are staying high then you can do a minor carb adjustment and deal with that.

You're not going to blow anything up even if the idle is a bit high.

if you can tune the carb to keep the engine at a steady idle you should be all good.
you may have to play with the throtle cable to if you have a lot of free space when you throtle up you may wana tighten it up some.
