Very aged MIL's grass was just too long to keep ignoring during this drought and air-quality alert (Canadian FF smoke)
Got an early start, mowed and trimmed her yard, watered her flowers - wearing a mask again!
After I finished I phoned her to bring her to the door to give her mail and newspaper.
She said, "I'm not dressed yet!"
I said, "well, OK keep your eyes closed when you get to the door!"
This nonagenarian had a good laugh with that.

(I'd like to have a chat with the "easy start!" sticker guy!)


I set the deck high - so as not to further stress the lawn which is already stressed by this weeks long drought.
Many of the neighbors fairly scalped their yards!

Correct to set mower up to high or highest cutting level during times of heat and drought. Biggest mistake most homeowners with our Northern, cool season grasses make, is cutting too low. That stresses the lawn, as it uses its energy reserves for fast growth as its source of making energy (leaves) has just been removed, opens the dirt up to the sun for even more evaporation and helps weed seeds germinate.

I can't tell you how many times someone with a weedy lawn has cut their grass progressively shorter in the misguided attempt to 'get' the weeds...not realizing that to help stop the weeds the grass needs to grow taller to help shade out the weeds. Counter intuitive to most but the correct action.

Before I rediscovered 2 wheels my lawn was my passion...now it's a pain in my rear....
