Speedometer not working
« on: October 23, 2024, 09:49:53 PM »
I just purchased a 2008 Kymco People 200s.  The speedometer is not working. When you turn the key to the on position, the speedo needle does the self test sweep, so there is a sign of life there.

I"ve owned 3 other Kymco scooters, only 1 of them has a working speedometer.

Is the issue with these usually the speedo unit, the cable, or the drive unit that's on the front wheel?

Any troubleshooting tips to find which part is faulty?

Hey, a post in the S200 section! Welcome! Like you said, the S200 has a drive unit on the front wheel and a cable that connects the drive unit to the speedo head unit.  I'd start with the easy one, the drive unit on the wheel. You can unhook the speedo cable from the drive unit and put it in a drill and run it to see if the head unit shows speed. If it does your drive unit probably needs some help...if it doesn't do anything you can assume it's your head unit.

It's possible for the cable to come loose from either the drive unit or the head unit. The head unit access is a pain..you have to split the plastics around the headlight to get to the back side of the speedo unit.

If it's the drive unit on the front wheel (possible to get stripped out?) you'll access it by removing the front wheel. There are a few posts somewhere in the S200 section explaining how to split the headlight cover for access. Be sure to let us know what you find so we can bank that away to help others in the future.
