AG50 wont start
« on: March 12, 2011, 10:30:09 PM »
Hi, 4 months ago I stored my AG 50 in a cold garage after adding fuel stabilizer and removing the battery. I pull it out put the battery in and it cranks but wont start. I pulled the plug, cleaned it (it only has 400 mi on the odometer, bought it new in aug) and all it does is crank. Can anyone give me ideas on how to get it running before I go postal?   Thank you   Dale

clean clean clean just go threw and clean the carb and the air box if you think the gas is bad drane the tank and go from there sounds like thats all it is. sometimes if bad gas sits in the gas filter it well clog up replace it also. or you can take the gas line off after the filter shot a little gas in there and give it a start and see if that helps. and if you have bad gas siting in the carb open the dran on the carb so the bad gas well flow out.

My Xciting was stored for only 2 months and needed cranking for well over 30 seconds continuously before I even began to hear it try to fire.   I stored it with fuel stabilizer in it and made sure to ride it a while after adding to get the stabilizer through the carb.  I went out and rocked the scooter back and forth at least once a week to keep the fuel from just sitting at one level the whole time.   And, like you, took battery out and kept it in good shape.  Even with all that it took all that cranking.  So, my advice is to just keep trying and it might just suprise you and start eventually.  Don't, however, do like I did and crank continuously (that was stupid of me).  Crank for about 5 or 6 seconds -- if it doesn't start, let the starter cool off for 15 or 20 seconds, then crank again.

I used the stabilizer and ran it for 5 min before storing, but I did not move at all for @ 4 months.I cleaned the plug, tried shooting starting fluid in and it wont even attempt to start, just cranks. My next move is to take it to a shop and probably get hosed. Is there anything I can do next winter to prevent this? Or is this a normal every year occurance?  Thank you for your responses,It's releiving to know there is someone you can count on.   Dale

Did you make sure the battery had a good strong charge. it well crank over with a weak battery and not start unlesss the battery has a full charge they work like a car battery they also have cranking amps that has to be strong enough to crank the scoot over.

Yes I did.  all the while I was trying to start it I had the battery charger hooked up to it, about an hour total. I'm guessing the carb just needs cleaned although with it being new and me adding stabilizer I just don't understand. I think if this happens often I'm gonna look into a 2 stroke scooter because I hear theyre easier to start in cold weather. It's really disappointing because I bought this new,had it for a day and had to take it back to the dealer to have a new carb put in cause said mine was shot ( took @ 2 weeks ) got to ride for @ 2 months then put into storage and now this.  Thank you for responding, hope some day I'll be able to answer questions for newbies also   Dale

Do you know if your getting a spark? Have you checked the ignition coil and CDI?

One thing I've done to bypass the carb if it was dirty, was just pour a little gas in the cylinder through the intake manifold vacuum hoses and then try to turn over the scooter. The scooter started for a few seconds and then puttered out. That helped me figure out that I either had clogged jets or a bad auto bystarter.
