Xciting 500 stalling??
« on: March 25, 2011, 03:34:36 PM »
Need help, riding home after 16+ miles, in rush hour traffic. 2009 x500, stalled out when at a traffic light.
Put flashers on, restarted and seemed fine. Turned throttle and it stalled again, did this 4 times...in rush hour traffic...REAL FUN!!
Fuel gage showed 1/2 tank of fuel. Finally able to restart by holding brake and revving throttle at the sametime. Made it home 20mins. later, it was acting as if it had a an engine miss...Called dealer next they said bad gas or ethynol in fuel.

Has anyone else had the issue? Dealer wants to charge $90.00 to look at it.
Told them x500 is less than a year old.
Please give advise!!!!!!! ??? ???
Never look back, because someone my pass you.

Check your air filter.  There's a good chance it needs to be cleaned or replaced.  I've had that same thing happen to me where the scooter just upped and died on me but got up and going when I put on a bit of throttle.  Turned out the breather tube going into the air intake chamber before the filter was causing a bit of clogging on the filter.  Once the filter was replaced... good as new.

Mine started doing that and hard starting after I got some bad gas a week ago.  I got clued in to the bad gas cause another scooter rider I know told me he had same problems from same gas at same station.  Maybe there's a lot of bad gas going around right now or they're putting more ethanol in it. ??

I started adding additional Startron fuel additive and still took several tankfuls of better grade gas from different stations.  Now it's almost cleared up.  I'm still going to look at the fuel filter.

Regarding gas, yes, I had similar problem with what I believe to be a dose of bad gas. I usually only gas up at top-tier name brand stations, and use premium for the extra detergent cleaning power. And my scooter runs better on premium

I have been having problems with this also. Dealer said that one-cylinder engines do this when hot (huh?). Others in my scooter group indicated it has more to do with vapor lock/california emission standards/gas cap vent clogged.

So I have been watching it. Only happens when hot, never happens on a full tank, happened yesterday at 80 miles on the trip meter. I was able to restart after opening the gas cap (would not pop open by itself - had to use my fingers), and the gas guage dropped from above the half mark to below the half mark - about where I would expect it to be at 80 miles. This seems to give my fellow riders more credibility than the dealer.

Now all I have to do is figure out how to fix it. That has to happen, since it will only get hotter here in Florida, and this stalling thing is no fun.

A tiny air intake would solve the underpressure problem.
