cvt temp. seems way to high

i got a kymco super 8 with the 80cc kit and 24 mm carb it runs great and does about 45 on the flats but when i get done riding the cvt cover is so hot i cant even touch it! i got a temp reading of about 200 in the front and 190 in the rear. do all the covers run this hot? from what i know the cooler something is the better. is there a way to open up the cvt cover with holes somewhere? get more air flow in there? if not i guess i can put my left over dinner on it and cook it on my way into work!

If your scoot is 2 stroke, and especially with kit, it is possible that cvt will be hotter.
That is why cvts usually have some passive air cooling (air hose coming from the air filter).
If Super 8 does not have it by default, I would try to do it by adding air intake at the front of the cvt, but you should also somehow manage that air goes out too somewhere. Take care not to introduce water and dirt in the cvt by changing its layout.

thanks for the input! sorry i left that out its a 4t. and the cvt cover has a one inch hole in front to let air in but this seems way to small. where would you say would be a good place to add some holes and not let water in?

For intake, I would not drill holes, because just drilling them would be almost like you did nothing.
I would drill large hole in the front part of the CVT (not hole but vent, let's say, 1x4 cm) and connect it with flexible hose to the air filter.
Then, some vent should be made in the rear part of the CVT. Manufacturers usually place them in the rear part of the cvt, towards inside of the scooter (towards the tire).

Maybe figure out a way to add a larger funnel at the front of the intake snorkel? 
They do make covers that expose the variator and clutch, but that obviously wont keep the rain out.

Steves idea about making a "snorkel" sounds good to me.

I was actually thinking of doing the same on my Agility 50. I want to keep me scoot looking like its not been too modded but at the same time get more power/speed so thought of making some kind of intake and doing away with the stick rubber hose for the airbox that just kind of hangs there looking sh!t.

I was going to cut an intake hole somewhere on the front of the side panel, the colored panel under the seat, or in the front under my seat and planned to put a car bonnet vent or scoop of some kind over the hole. Then was going to run a wide hose of some kind into the airbox.

I bought a few intakes off ebay cheaply to try it but i have yet to find something im 100% happy with before i cut up my panels. Just resprayed my scooter a couple of months ago tho so now im wary to cut it up cos its looking nice right now. Probably look at it again when i get time to plan it out properly.


Same idea would work on your cvt cover ,in my opinion, maybe im wrong but i cant see why it wouldnt work? Also as Axy says if you put a hole, (exhaust) at the rear too then air should, in theory, run thro the inside of the cvt prettty well i think.

Or what about fitting a race fan on the variator? would these not help? Seen them in load of shops and ebay pretty cheap.
