Belt dressing warning.
« on: May 31, 2011, 08:02:43 AM »
Just a quick warning to anyone who has thought of spraying belt dressing on their belt, DONT DO IT. I did because I was told by an engineer at work it would help my belt run better and prevent any slippage. Soon learned after test running that our scooter belts need to slip to travel up and down the cvt properly.
I sprayed mine on Sunday and whhen I went to work on Monday morn my scooter was running like crap. Spent most of last night stripping down my variator, clutch and belt, cleaning it all, then reassembling it. Is a lot better now but think the clutch still may have a little spray on it as its not 100% right. Im waiting for a new clutch and 1000rpm contra spring arriving this week anyway, cos mine is worn, so will try put up with scoot till then. Revs seem to go very high and stays in low gear longer than I think it did before I did the whole spray thing  :(
So whatever you do, DO NOT PUT BELT DRESSING SPRAY ON YOUR SCOOTER BELT.
Chaos is my co-pilot.

I have used that stuff on coveyor belts and v-belts, I can imagine it made a bit of a mess. Good looking out for others.

We learn by our mistakes I guess. Cleaned variator, belt and clutch best I could. My crankcase is still a bit sticky inside but it was 9:45pm and going dark so I had to get it back together to use my scoot for work today. Still not right tho almost back to normal, its still reving way too high now up to 20mph-ish then seems to run ok from there. Sure its just a combination of he spray and the fact I noticed that my clutch only has 2 of the 3 surfaces on it!! The other one has vanished sometime so just as well I had a reason to check it. Ordered new clutch and 1000rpm torque spring on sunday so hope it arrives this week so I can get it running good again. Going to try 7.5g rollers with the 1000rm spring I think, also have my 5.5 g ones for back up if 7.5g is too heavy.
Oh the joys of scootering, frustration when it goes wrong but feels great when you do it right.

"Borrowed" some electronic degreaser spray from work today and cleaned out inside of crankcase, clutch, variator, belt etc properly. Seems back to how it was before now so just waiting for my new clutch to arrive and torque spring then im sorted. Still runs ok just now but clutch needs replaced sue to missing pad.

Was screaming all the way up to 25 mph coming home earlier cos the gunk was holding it changing gear properly, quite embarrassing with all the noise and everyone turning to see a scoot going so slow  ::)

Sounds like my old Honda Spree. Lol! A guy once told me it sounded like someone was 'hauling butt' over the hill, then my Spree comes into view at a screaming 30 MPH. Lol!
