Can I pull the valve cover without pulling the engine from the frame

Yeah, just have a helper push down on the rear end while you pluck the valve cover off.

Have it on the side stand then center it and move it up and down, you'll see how much clearance you'll need.

I tried it by myself with a cinching strap, but couldn't get it to clear from where I was pulling the engine to the frame on the center stand.

My buddy shows up, bounces the rear end down, and it popped right off. Replacement was easy in reverse.

I pulled my shocks off and the mount that limits the travel and jacked the tire all the way up

Yep, Doc, I use the cinch strap method cause I can never find a helper when I need one.  :D  It's kind of a pain but does work.  I do it while on the side stand. It was Zombie who originally suggested that method to me.  Wish he still came around here but I know he's got his good reasons. 

I might try removing the shock mounts next time.  Sounds easier.

I removed the shocks and the dog bone and the back tire was up against the battery I may try and lower my bike. That is after I get it fixed may be a bad head
