watch your brakes
« on: August 24, 2011, 09:16:42 PM »
I am at 7400 miles and front pads are shot, rotors are pretty badly scared.  Blame myself - not checking them enough.  I took it by the Honda shop at about 4500 miles and they said I had barely used any of the pad - so I assumed they were going to last a long long time.  I ordered some new rotors - stock - because I could not find any aftermarket to fit.  Also ordered a new front tire - mine is badly cupped on both sides - Honda expert says that is from under inflation.  I need to check my air gauge because it has never been under inflated - I check that pretty regularly - but if my gauge is off then all the best plans of mice and ..  I took a chance and ordered cheap brake pads from ebay - I figure if they are a problem I will be an expert on fixing it.  I will be paying better attention to all my scooter brakes in the future.  I ignorantly assumed they would last 20 to 30k - WRONG!  Also I am going to be more gentle in using my brakes - quit enjoying the way the fronts stop you fast!

replaced both sets of front pads (one set was toast - the other set was still good.  put on a new front tire - mine had weird wear on it.  Got a lesson in blue loctight.  The new rotors showed up about a week late - I used the old ones as 2 mechanics both said there would not be a problem, so I will have rotors for next time.  Everything works and feels good.  I will be waatching them a lot closer.

Does your People have linked brakes?  Was it the left pads or the right?  If the brakes aren't linked then you need to look into why one set wore out faster.  If they are linked - you may want to use the other brake more.

Personally I don't like linked brakes.  I'm used to giving a little rear brake and then clamping down hard on the front.  The linked Kymco brakes are linked on the left brake lever - so it's best to use some left lever and then clamp down hard on both.

On my P250S pads were completely dead around 8100 miles.

I also found this to be strange because on my ex. Beverly 200 I changed them around 13.000 miles and they still had plenty of meat on them.

Furthermore, gf's A125 has had the same front pads for the past 16.300 miles and they are still good.

It was the right side as you sit on the bike (that wore out the worse - they were pretty much gone).  I am wondering why the rotors were so worn - they looked the same on all four surfaces - way more scratchy looking and feeling than the rears or the rotors on either of my other scooters.  Maybe poor metal?

More likely you got some kind of contaminant between the pads and the rotors, or the actual pads were bad.  Had you ridden down a dusty road and then hit your front brakes with dust on disks you could have embedded it into the pads.  No telling.

Were the front brakes maybe dragging?  I've had that happen because the diaphragm in the master cylinder didn't return all of the way.   I was riding along thinking I was fighting the wind - when suddenly it was like someone else was putting my brakes on.  The front disk and caliper were so hot they were ticking and had boiled the brake fluid - locking the disk.

I've also had pads suddenly wear very fast because the bike was ridden through a rainstorm for the first time - and the pads disintegrated.  There was something already wrong with them - it just wasn't noticeable until they were wet for a day...  I won't buy brake pads off of eBay again because of that...

scooter has only been driven on pavement - fairly clean, the only thing might be winter time chemicals maybe??  I do tend to use the brakes hard - I would say I am an 8 on a 1 to 10 fast stopping scale.  Everything is fine since the change.  Did order a new back tire to go with my new front one.  Also Ebay 50 bucks each.  We will see how they wear.
