Best way to switch oil
« on: March 01, 2012, 02:55:54 PM »
Im at 1/2 tank of oil currently, want to switch to amsoil interceptor. Should I fill it up now? Give it time to acclimate to the new oil..... or just wait till its almost gone and start fresh? Thanks

There is no such thing as "oil acclimatization".

Different oils can be mixed without problems. Personally, I would keep the base and SAE value the same.

This means that I would mix dino oil with dino oil, semi with semi and full synt with full synt, and I would mix oils with same multi grade designation, to keep additives content constant.

Translated into 2-stroke world you live in, and considering that SAE value is not of importance, you should only take care that the base is the same and that's it.

p.s. Considering that forum took a strange turn lately, I hope that somebody will not contradict this, say that "you can go by common sense", you can mix oil with dog's piss etc...

I am looking now at http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/ait.aspx , and I cannot understand is it fully or semi-synthetic.
The text says that it is "a proprietary blend of the finest synthetic base oils and additives available today". In Europe, marketing is playing tricks on us, so cheaper semi-synthetic oils are marketed as "synthetic BASED", (based=participial adjective).

It seems that it costs 5-6 US$/l, and in Europe you can get only low end semi-synthetic oil for that kind of money, but prices might be different in USA.

Anyway, to keep it simple, you can wait until oil tank is close to empty and top it up with new oil, but certainly nothing will happen if you once mix oils of different bases. :)

If it's been running fine with the oil that is in it then don't worry.  There is no acclimating to be done.  Add the 2 stroke oil you want to use.  I would highly recommend you don't wait until the tank is almost empty - you risk running lean or worse running out.

I don't know the capacity of your tank - but  most will hold a bottle and a half.  I would add a bottle as soon as you have room to put a whole bottle in so you don't have a half empty bottle of oil sitting around.

I used an old turkey baster to suck the old oil out of mine , then filled it with full synthetic amsoil interceptor oil . Good luck .

That brings up a good point.  If you think the oil in your tank may be bad (for whatever reason) - don't drain the tank.  Do as juice did and remove some.  If you pull the line and drain the tank you have to ensure you don't end up with a line or pump that won't flow because they have an air bubble.
