Engine oil level is too low
« on: August 08, 2012, 06:50:38 AM »
I've replaced the engine oil on my 2001 Grand Dink 250 when i've had 27083 km's on board and i've filled the oil bath to the maximum, now i'm at 28034 km's and the oil on the dipstick is at the lowest level, what may be the problem for that oil loss? P.S. I don't have oil leaks on the engine.

Have to ask the simple questions first.

Is the scooter on the main (center) stand and on a level surface ?
Are you experienced in the task of changing oil on this scooter?
How long have you had the scooter ?
You are using 10w40 oil or there about ?

If there are no oil leaks, then one has to conclude that the oil is being lost through the engine operation (worn rings or valve guides).
To check this, a compression test is the 1st step.

But, first:  get the scooter on a level surface on the main stand and add oil to the Max mark.
Then check the oil in the same manner every 250 km to see if the loss continues at the same rate.
Make sure that you haven't overfilled it by a major amount.

Keep in touch.

Yes, it was on the main stand, and on a level surface, i have a 4 year experience on everything mechanical on a 4 stroke gas scooter. This scooter i've bought-it from a dealer on the 30th of May 2012, the dealer is specialized in importing second-hand scooters, motorcycles and atv's. When I've first changed the oil, I've added 1 liter of 20W-40. I've read in the manual of a different type of large scooter that: "In 4T engines, the engine oil is used to lubricate the distribution elements, the bench bearings and the
thermal group. An insufficient quantity of oil can cause serious damage to the engine.
In all 4T engines, the deterioration of the oil characteristics, or a certain consumption should be considered
normal, especially if during the run-in period. Consumption levels in particular can be influenced
by the conditions of use (e.g.: oil consumption increases when driving at ,,full throttle"
. I admit, i have running a few times on full throttle. Today i've changed the oil and added 15W-40.

An oil loss measured from the top of the level indicator to the bottom of the indicator is not an inordinate amount of oil for an engine with 28000 kms on it after 1000 kilometers of running.

Proper level is in the middle of the indicator.

If the rings are worn, there will be significant blow by and pressure to the crankcase resuliting in the vent blowing oil to the collector on the airbox. See if there's any oil in the clear tube by the CVT.

Since there's only a liter of oil, it's best to change it frequently.

There was a little oil inside the air filter housing but maybe because the crank case was overfilled the first time i've changed the oil, the oil level was over the max. mark.

Sounds like you're in good shape, then, so just keep a good record of how much oil you add between changes.

I live in the desert, so for summer I run 20w50, and fortify it with STP oil additive, whch has a lot of zinc in it, and it thickens the oil considerably.

In the winter I run 15w40, and thin it a little with Marvel Mystery Oil.

If the piston rings are good, can you turn the crankshaft by hand using the variator plate as the handle? Or with a socket wrench?
