Performance Upgrade Options - People 50 (2009)
« on: September 05, 2010, 11:55:54 PM »
Outside of derestricting, can any member of the community describe what performance upgrades offer the most "bang for your buck"? I am aware that a big bore kit exists, but how 'bout exhaust upgrades, etc., etc.

I will probably go the route of the big bore kit, but wanted to ping the community for your thoughts. For instance, what about this?

Hey todd welcome to the forum. The 2009 was restricted quite a bit. The pipe is a big draw back.
If you are going with a big bore kit get the tecnogas rs2. If you want some better stock performance Upjet to at least an #85 main and put a hole in the stock air box about a 1\4" will do it. Of course you need to replace the cdi with the kymco cobra or an = and remove the drive boss restricion first if it has one.
This should put you in the 50mph range,If you can locate a 2004 or older stock pipe cheap or free 50+ is not a problem.
The biggest bang for the buck after de restriction is open air(k/n) pipe and jetting to match. Another is setting the squish(have the head shaved, around 40,oooths) The performance realy comes to life with this mod (about $20) If you do the removel and intall. Ha! of course there is more but this will give you some great improvments without the cost of the big bore and a new carb. Should be knocking on 60 mph. Good luck!!!
Kymco peoples too many ;) I'm not an expert just a full time hobbiest.

Art, thank you for your thorough reply.

I forgot to mention that I am a complete neophyte to the world of scooting. Can you perhaps reframe your response in layman's terms? Apologies for being an ignoramus, but alas such is the case.  Is there a step by step guide in terms of the specifics you provided?

Thanks for helping out an amateur in need.

Hmm simply put do not do a big bore kit if not familure with your bike. The best free and cheap gains will be order a #85 main jet. http://www.pjmotorsports.com/keihin-jets.html#main jets  .Think it's the 99101-116 size 85.  Next drill a hole in the air box.look at pic. Put it behind this front cover once you get this far report back with results and i'll try to go from there.
All the mods in the world won't help if cdi and boss drive are restricted so you should get those done first.(boss may or may not be restricted) .   http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/RACE-CDi-BOX-KYMCO-Cobra-Topboy-Yager-Super-9-Dink-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem5d2abd2819QQitemZ400148998169QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories  .
http://scootertherapy.mybigcommerce.com/products/Kymco-Boss-Drive-Face-%28Clutch-Boss%29.html  .   This is where you should start. Good luck

Hey Art, if you get around to it please explain the head shaving thing. I assume you mean just taking 40 thousandsths off the head surface to get a higher compression? Any need to worry about interference with this mod? A change in jetting isn't needed I would think. This is for a '09 super 9 btw. I haven't heard of this topic being discussed on this forum yet but then again I don't have easy access to internet right now. Thanks in advance.

Todd, here is a link that will get you started although I haven't bought anything on this page. There are many recommendations from forum members if you do a search.

I am interested to find out if the quarter inch hole in the air cleaner box is after removing the restriction, or with leaving the restriction in place. I'm driving a Like 50 2t, but the People 50's seem to have the same set ups (restrictions).
Great thread, though. Very helpful infos. Thank you!

Hey sparko, art hasn't been around for quite some time, not since another "member" continuously hung s#*t on him.
Is a pity, he was a nice bloke.
Cheers,
Sid.
