almost ready for the initial service.
« on: May 21, 2009, 08:40:20 PM »
I am now at 600 miles and waiting for an opening at the Kymco dealership to get my scoot in.  What exactely will be done?  I assume they go by the maintenance schedule that is in the owners manual.
I would like to replace my oil with a synthetic ( probably amsoil or lucas ) but should that be motorcycle oil??? Also the owners manual says    to replace the transmission fluid with SAE 90.  Is that transmission fluid or gear oil ??  I dont know about scooters, this is my first. Always had MC's....but am loving this x500.  So can I use Amsoil synthetic mc oil and amsoil transmission fluid or gear oil.?  Thanks  Jim

On scooters the cvt and clutch have to be dry. You only need engine and transmission oil.

That's SAE 90 gear oil.  I am still running on what the dealer put in first oil change.  I will be using synthetic oil from Walmart that I use in other scoot and bikes.  If they still carry it Rotella synthetic.  Lots of folks on the boards use Amsoil synthetic in their scoots and swear by it.  Other than operating temperature I don't think the oil in these scoots takes the beating the oil in motorcycles does, since it is not running in the transmission and getting the shear from the gears.  If the oil meets the recommended specs use it.

Getting ready to ride from Louisville to Indy this weekend.  Will be taking the back roads.  I am looking forward to it.  The X500 gets better the more I ride it.  Yeehaaa ;D

Winginman, I dont know the route you are planning to Indy, either 31 is good or 135 is good.  If you get a chance  ride Hwy 135 from Brownstown to Nashville IN.  If ever a road will let you know how the x500 will handel the twisties that will. Thanks every one for the info.  Gear Oil. Jim

Hey Winginman,

About that oil, I am using a syn blend, and have been for some 20k miles. I get the idea from your post that full synthetic has some advantages, what are they?

Synthetic oils are more resistant to breaking down under high temperatures, even when diluted such as in the synthetic blends.  They are also supposed to maintain viscosity and flow better.   Supposedly they further reduce friction and are purer than regular oils due to some impurities that cannot be removed by the refining process.  Thats the tech answer, over the years I have moved to blends then to synthetic oil because on my regular bikes I found that shifting was smoother with these oils.  I could literally feel the difference. That tells me the oil is lubricating better and there is less friction.  For the price difference it's the cheapest insurance you can buy to have the comfort that you are reducing friction (better performance, longer life, better gas mileage) and when it's really hot in the summer knowing your oil will not break down.  Which brand is best?  I used to run an auto service center and sold oil.  I use whatever meets the specs and I can find at the best price. All of these modern synthetics and synthetic blends are good, just pay attention to the specs and know what your scoot manufacturer requires.  I am sure there are some real technical types on the board that can give a better answer and would welcome the input.

Jim, as far as this weekend to Indy, we will head up on 31 and come back via 135.  135 is one of my favorite rides when we go from Louisville up to Nashville, IN.  It is a great bike road between Brownstown and Nashville.  We have more time coming back and will take the longer way.  Going up we have to make a bit better time.  It's 120 miles from my house to my sisters up in Mooresville.   My wife will be riding along on her Aprilia S500GT which does not quite take the curves like the X500 and is a bit more sensitive to crosswinds,so I have to take it easier than if I was going by myself.   We'll have to get together and put on some miles this summer.  I have a number of scooter riding friends and we like to get together and ride when we can.  Not real organized but we have a lot of fun.

Can you tell, it's a slow day at the office.  Everyone is taking off for the weekend and I can't leave cause I have two appointments after 5 PM today...  I would rather be out riding on a day like this...

Thanks for the info.

Recently, my mechanic pulled the heads and took a look around. Said it looked great, clean, very little wear after 20,000 miles in 14 months. Premium gasoline, ummm.

Yeah, slow days at the office, I remember those. I would have to work Sunday occasionally, and it was . . . yeah, like that.
