Highway ride
« on: April 29, 2012, 12:54:58 AM »
Hello everyone, well tomorrow I have to ride 100 miles on the expressway and am a bit nervouse. Ive had the xciting 500 for three years and love it but only have been on short stints on the freeway. I am trying to get use to it but for some reason when cruising at 70 75 mph i am scared to lean around the curves, I feel like I am going to fall. I am having trouble trusting the scooter while leaning! Does anyone else feel like this. Or does anyone ride the freeway alot that can give me any advice??
I thank you all for any advice you can give me!!

I think I know what you mean.  Things are just different at highway speeds and all those lanes.  But don't worry, you won't fall over!  In fact after the first half of the trip I bet you won't even be thinking about it anymore.   ;)  Just use extra caution around any big trucks and cars going over the speed limit.

I live in Houston and the majority of my miles are highway miles.

Here's a tip. Don't lean in the curves. Just countersteer. There's no real reason to lean into anything on the kymco. Seriously.

Just countersteer in the turns. Quite easy.

Hoolander is right, it would be the same on any bike the first time on a free way. When I have gotten a new bike in the past it takes a while to get used to it. After some time you will not even think about it anymore. Google motorcycle counter stearing if you have not heard of this before, (also you tube). It is where you push the handle bar (slightly) forward with either hand to make the bike turn right or left. Its very easy and only takes a few miles to get the hang of it. Practice it in a straight line first. You will see how it will make the bike go L or R with almost no effort. Soon you will hold the line at any speed around the curves. Make sure your tire pressure is at the max. I think the stock tires were 34 lbs? If your pressure is down a few pounds, you really notice it more so on a scooter than a bike. It has to do with sprung & un-sprung weight. Take it from me, I have about 30,000 miles on my X500 now, 90% freeway. Two trips from Arizona to Michigan, one day was 1,004 miles in 24 hours, rode all night. The scoot will do it. :-*

Sit on it, forget about bs and just drive.

There are 100s of things that will cause you to fall down, on the highway and regular roads.
Leaning over too much is the LAST ONE of them.

I regularly take mine at speeds in excess of 70 mph. On the turns, just slightly back off on the throttle if you feel you are getting pulled out of your lane. It is no different at 45 as it is at 75. Don't panic, relax and enjoy the ride. You will not fall over! Don't let passing vehicles scare you, just look forward at where you are going. I fully trust my XC500. As I mentioned before, just relax. If you still do not feel comfortable, then don't go on the freeway and find side roads.
