Almost lost muffler shield!
« on: March 22, 2012, 05:19:01 AM »
Was ridin' to work today and suddenly there was a weird noise that sounded like someone dragging an empty plastic milk carton on the ground. Stopped at a light and looked behind me and noticed my muffler cover was hanging by a single screw and dragging the ground. Pulled into a parking lot and examined it. Seems two top screws are missing and I almost lost a lower one. The one that was still attached was loose.

Did these come loose over time from vibration? Anyone else have that happen to 'em?

Guess that's a good reason for the pre-ride check!

Pre-ride T-CLOCS yes. I've lost two of my original muffler cover screws, and have had to tighten then at least have a dozen times. After a fairly bumpy ride I always check to make sure the screws haven't come loose.

I also lost two of the four screws holding the burn guard to the muffler.  Took months for my dealer to get replacement screws and leather grommets or whatever they're called.  I need to purchase and apply some loctite to prevent this from happening again.

I purchased a tube of Loctite 242 at Loews for $6 to see if it would stop the burn shield bolts from wiggling out.  Turns out it this was a good move because one of the bolts had already come loose again.  Probably too early to tell if it will work, but I'm hoping.
