I use my garmin nuvi 30 because it has 4 hours battery life compared to tom toms 90 mins, also you can get the bike/cycle holder for the garmin for £1.54 from ebay see link below then i just wrap a little cling film over the sat nav just to protect it from the rain its not the best set up but its worked for me, you cant always hear the spoken instructions but on the garmin its easy to follow just using the display only as it also gives written instruction as you aproach turns etc....

is this the one ur refering to

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_categoryId_165685_productId_862367_langId_-1?cm_mmc=GooglePPC-_-Google%20Product%20Search-_-Sat%20Nav%20%26%20GPS%2FCar%20Sat%20Nav-_-Garmin%20Nuvi%2030%20Sat%20Nav%20-%20UK%20%26%20ROI&source=ppc

since u already have it then ur the perfect person to ask this question to! when setting a destination on it to get a route do you have the option to tell it to avoid motorways so it only gives u a route to follow as on L plates?

Yes you can tell it to avoid motorways and toll roads, i have recently moved to a rural area and without the sat nav i would have got lost down the many winding country roads so its really helped why i get use to the area, i also normaly set mine for shortest route rather than fastest as the shorter route turns out to be the quickest if you cant get much more than 30 to 40 mph but you can preview the route before you set off and decide which looks more suited for that journey fastest or shortest route, it also tells you how many miles the journey will be and your rough time of arrival. I attach mine to the right wing mirror post near the bottom of the stem so its to the right of the speedometer and because the garmin uses a pivot ball type attachment it does not matter the wing mirror post is on a akward angle the garmin can just be rotated to keep it the correct way up and facing you hope this helps....

Yes that is the one in the link but i got mine from asda for 49.99 i previously had tom tom for my car which is a good sat nav but the battery only lasts about a hour in real use. I much prefer the garmin now as it is easier to use as it has simpler menu and also lane guidance and much better battery life about 3 hours in real use.....

thanks very much m8, n i know what u mean as sometimes the route comes up as the fastest because most of the road is national speed limit which we cant go that fast n most other roads are 30 - 40mph.

i am gonna shop around for a better price but now that i know that sat nav has the funtions i need i may just go for it.

are you on the same bike as me and do u have the same mirrors as obv iv never seen the clap in person but seems like the mirror bar would be 2 thin! would it be possible for you to post a picture of ur setup u have on ur bike when u get a chance possibly 2day or 2moro as would be helpful

I will try take pic tomorrow but last time i tried i could not get the image to upload, yes i have the same mirrors as you i just make the mirror stem a little wider with some rubber from a old inner tube then it fits fine, the only slight problem i do find but you will have this problem with any sat nav on a bike is strong sunlight makes the image harder to see so sometimes i did need to pull over and put my hand over the display to see it better but its not a problem on overcast days which we mainly get in the uk.....
