Diff Lock Problem?
« on: April 19, 2012, 01:34:16 PM »
I just took delivery of a new 500i SE last night.  I'm having a couple of issues.

First, the diff lock button doesn't seem to do anything.  Am I using it wrong?  I flip the top of the switch toward the back of the vehicle, but I get NO indicator on the LCD display.  "LOCK" doesn't show up as the manual says it should.  Nothing.

Second, park is a bit funky.  I have a hard time getting it into park sometimes (almost always actually), but if I rock the machine or play with the lever a bit I can get it to go into Park.  THEN, if I DO get it into park, it's difficult to get it out of park.  If I push the lever forward I can get the "R" light to light up, but the lever won't stay there and it won't go further forward than roughly the "R" position.  If I let go it snaps back into park.  The only way I've been able to get it OUT of park is to step on the gas a bit when it's showing as in reverse, then the lever will behave normally again.  Is this a simple adjustment or do I have a serious problem?  Dealer says it's because it's new and it'll be better once broken in.  I'm thinking it needs an adjustment somewhere.

Thanks.

I think I can answer part of my question.  Looks like the "Lock" lights up after moving a bit.  I stop, flip the switch nothing happens, but if I leave it on and drive a short distance "LOCK" lights up, so it looks like it's working correctly.  Same thing when turning it off.  Stop, flip it back, then drive a short distance and the light goes off.  Seems to be working.

Park is still odd though.  Putting it into park and getting it out is still a bit tricky.

I will give the partial answer of your question. The light switch is on the transfer box. If you view from above facing towards the front of the car it sits next to the main box before the casting goes around the main box. Not sure if that makes sense to you but it does to me.
