Hello everyone, bought my 09 Xciting 500RI this past January. Today I logged 345 miles. Being a complete novice with motorcycles and scooters this forum has been invaluable to me in learning how to ride. Obviously I am not experienced enough to drive at extended high speeds. I have learned to ride on the back roads near my home. Also there is a state park close by with large parking lots that I have used to learn how to make turns without falling over. I normally ride at speeds between 45-60 miles per hour. Today I took it up to 70 and 80 for short periods of time. What a blast! My question to you folks is the scooter sufficiently broken in to tolerate these short bursts of speed? Is there any way I could mess up the sealing process on the belt and rollers by doing this? Any advice on break in would really be appreciated. Thanks, Mike

Mike, there are a lot of schools of thought on how to break in an engine. There's "ride-it-like-you-stole-it" style, There's the breaking in of a rebuilt engine that takes just around a few minutes, There's the no-breaking-in anymore because the machine has undergone a series of breaking-in in the factory already. This is concerning the engine, per se, but for rollers and belts, I don't know if there's a rule on breaking-in.

I think what you are doing is fine. Lowwer speeds/RPM's until about 500 miles with short burst up to 70-80 is perfect. After 500 miles you can run at HWY/FWY if you like. Change your oil and filter at 1000 miles with synthetic oil. (I use mobile one 15/50). There is no real break in for belts & such. Welcomb. :-*

Thanks Vivo and Sissy Mary. The Owner's Manual was a little confusing on the "break in period". Page 42; "the engine speed should be varied and not held at a constant rate for long periods of time. This allows the parts to be "loaded" with pressure, and then unloaded,
allowing the parts to cool. This aids in the mating process of the engine and transmission components. It is essential that some stress
be placed on these components during break-in to ensure this mating process. Do not, however, apply excessive load on the scooter's
drive line." and then it goes on to say, "operating the engine at constant low speed (light load) can cause parts to glaze and not seat properly. Allow the engine to accelerate freely through the gears." and then it says, "Avoid using full throttle for the first 1000 miles."
I don't know if I'm missing something in translation here. Am I "mating" or "glazing"? That's why I thought I would ask some of you gearheads if I cheat every now and then and bump the speed up above 60 mph am I causing future problems. It's always good to hear from you people out there in forum land. I'm the only one around here with a scooter and I really enjoy the KymcoForum.com. Thanks

Scooters have small engines. It's common sense that you will shorten its life if you abuse it. Just ride normally on average speeds. Some speeding is also good and flushes out some carbon inside. Mating is like matching perfectly like when the gears inside work smoothly. Glazing is when your cylinder wall becomes glazed or coated with stuff due to overheating or improper breaking-in. Breaking-in cannot continue if your cylinder wall is already glazed. Remember that breaking-in will set your piston rings to the cylinder wall to make a nice fit and a glazed cylinder wall will prevent this.

Just ride it the way you're gonna ride it for the rest of its life.
Other then keeping the throttle pinned and doing the top speed, you can do everything
else. Varying the revs as much as possible helps.
Don't baby it.

Your advice was very succinct, helpful, and understandable. If I remember correctly I thought I saw you in previous pics with an orange 500. If that was you man that is a beautiful scoot. Do you still have it? I went to my local Suzuki dealership to look at a
Burg 650 and left with the X500Ri and I'm glad I did. I think for the dollar value I made the best choice. Once again thanks for clearing up what read as contradictory advice in the Owner's Manual.

At to low of a speed you can also glaze your clutch pads as they do not fully lock up inside the clutch bell as they do at higher speeds. :-*
