Install saturday morning.
« on: May 12, 2012, 12:23:38 AM »
I picked up my new variator parts late friday. (Both pulley halfs). I will install everything tomorrow. I have new stock rollers and such. But I am going to install my used original belt. I can not see taking a chance again with a new belt as of yet. I down loaded the work shop manuel, and it is strange, but it does not say to put a dab of grease on the inner side of the inside/sliding pulley half? The half that the boss go's into/inside. I know both of my variators had a small amount of grease on the boss. Just a little, but it was there. So this seems strange? The rubber seal on inside pulley half is stated as a dust seal, and not a grease seal? Seems as it would or should be a grease seal? Oh well. I will put on just a dab of grease so it will/can break in right. And then slide the boss back and forth, and then wipe off any excess.  I am going to super clean everything, and then install. What is any body's thought on the grease? Yes or no? This time I know everything will be correct as I have studied video's and the manuel, and talked to Kymco mechanics, and Chet from Kymco USA. Who is a great guy by the way. Wish me luck. :-*

My thought is the dab of grease is assembly lube there for the protection of the seal only.  It's commonly instructed to use this on a new seal.  It's not for the metal parts in my opinion.  My new parts came dry except for a dab on the seal.  I have a little bottle of assembly lube left over from an engine rebuild I did a while back which I use from time to time when putting new parts in.  It's not meant to be permanant lubrication -- just to help get things going smoothly like breaking in.

I talked to Kymco before I could get the manuel down loaded, so we never spoke of it. I know it had some lube on the boss as I could see it. I have not taken the inner pulley half out of the box yet, (its still in the car), maybe it comes pre lubed? I will let you know. But Kymco and the manuel do not talk about grease. So I am thinking since the boss is steal, and the pulley is alloy, maybe it's not needed? Hoolander makes a good point about the rubber seal. Maybe that's all it's for, (the seal)? If it is not pre lubed, then I will ad a dab, work boss back and forth, wipe off excess, and install as per manuel. And then all I can do is ride it and hope it does not do it again. I'll keep u all up-dated. :-*

I forgot to say, Hoolander was right. The inner pulley half, (the one that slides on the boss) comes in a plastic bag and has a very small amount of grease on the rubber dust seal to protect that seal and not to lube the boss. So there is no need to grease anything! Like I am saying now and for ever, follow what the service book says and leave it stock. I'll ride it 500 miles or so, take a look at everything, if ok? I will install a new belt and leave it alone! :-*

Road about 120 miles today since it was my wifes day off. Average speed 55-60, with a little in town riding. Everything was perfect. RPM's about 500-750 less than the one gram heavyer Dr Pulley's? Makes no since as the RPM's should have gone up? Something smells bad about my Dr P's? Got about 53-54 MPG two up and loaded! Not bad for a carbed model.  :-* ;D
