Yeah, the video was pretty horrific. I'm surprised more damage wasn't done to his leg considering he was broadsided. The article said he was wearing a full shielded helmet. Is that the same as a full face helmet, or a 3/4 one with the visor down?

Personally, I'm not a fan of the half helmets considering that the majority of the blows to the head are on the face and jaw during a crash. They may protect your brain, but that means little if you go through life deformed with a life time of pain and discomfort.

Hope the cyclist sues the driver for everything. This wasn't even a case of trying to beat a read light. I'm an animator. Timing is my business. 9 seconds is an eternity. I have to wonder if she (the car driver) was on a cell which caused her to run the light.

Half helmets are great if you are worried about someone dropping something directly on the top of your head.

Beyond that, they are not much more than fiberglass hats.  I crashed a Triumph Bonneville a few years back.  Head first through the back window of a car then spinning down the street.  I walked away.  I was wearing an Arai full face and an armored jacket with long pants , boots and gloves (absolutely minimal wear for scooting/motorcycling imho).  The officer at the scene told me that a dude on a Harley had the same accident a few weeks earlier (head first through a car window) and although he was going slower than I was (30 mph vs. 55) he was still in a coma.  He had on a half helmet.  Go figure.

I only wear a full face but I usually don't try to convince others to. I consider it a form of natural selection. I keep hoping all the Squids in flip-flops, shorts and wife-beaters as well as the Harley Pirates with no helmet or a beenie cap helmet will kill themselves off.  (Just kidding .... kinda )

I wish no ill will towards any riders. 08087 and I may not see eye-to-eye on political issues, but I wish him the best of luck on his scooter test. Still, I do shake my head at the kind of riders Wiz described. If you're single with no immediate family -- no one who will be made into an accidental caretaker if you are in a life changing accident  -- such as a spouse, mother, father, etc ... -- then hey, knock yourself out (not literally). But if you have dependents or family members who care about you than I don't see the need to take such a huge risk.

I've heard the nay-sayers talk about how a full-face helmet cuts off your vision, or hearing -- not true. Or that a full face helmet is too expensive. Try this (it worked for me), save up you money to buy one. I purchased mine for $150.00. My only criticism is that they can be hot in the summer when waiting in traffic (my wive says it's like strapping a ski boot to your head) but I just open the visor and vents. However, they keep my face and head warm in colder weather.

The choice of wearing a half-helmet (brain bucket) is ultimately the riders, but I think one should be clear on the real protection they are giving you. It would be like wearing a nipple clamp and calling it a bullet-proof vest.

I wear half helmet going to the corner store to buy some stuff. Average speed, 10-20 mph. No fast cars in this area. For real trips, full-face.

@ Juice - Yes, half helmets are better than no helmet but it has its limitations and one must know when not to wear one. Flip-flops are also better than riding barefoot....

Some buy a full-face helmet but just carries it when riding.  A very common sight here. People use the helmet maybe to protect his elbow Lol!!

Thank you and agreed, we are all in this for the same reasons, ride safe, be smart, use caution.

I love the guys that ride the rice rockets (as they atre called) and have their full face helmets lose on top of their heads, as if thet will protect them at all. My guess is if they see a cop they will pull the helmet down over their head to beat a ticket.
