Hopkins Electronic Deer Alerts
« on: October 08, 2012, 01:37:34 AM »
Urbestfriend!
WoW! if these things actually work they would be the answer to my prayers. Even before I had the run-in with the deer I knew my chances were good of hitting one because they are along the sides of the road to my home and eventually I was going to hit one. My only way to avoid them was to ride before dark so that I could at least have a visual and that's not much help if they come running out of the woods. So any experience you have had with the Hopkins Deer Alert I would really appreciate. Thanks,
Mike

Just yesterday in fact.  1:00 in the afternoon.  Two lane countyline road
paved travels thru 2 heavily wooded areas.  2nd. area, deer was in my lane.
Heard the alarm chirping,  stopped, raised it's head and looked in my direction.
I was maybe 400 ft. away.  I honked my air horn and it ran off to the right.
Here's the catch.... A second one ran across the road immediately.  First one
may have walked off the road if it hadn't been stopped by the chirping.  The second one
could've have then ran across in front of me.   Who knows for sure,  but I've had two occurences
in the last 2 weeks.   This morning the Propane guy came for the winter fill-up.  He brought
the bill to me in the garage and he said his wife has a Zuma and is scared of the deer.
He heard the alarm and said he would order his wife one.   Like I say,  it even works
on people.   Remember...See the Video on "E-Trailer.com".

It heard the churp & looked at you! That's the problem right there. It's not so much the ones standing in the road, it's the ones that dart out in front of you. I don't think churps wistles or anything will solve the problem. They are not very smart animals, and often I have seen them run accross the road, see my car, and then turn around and run back to the other side right infront of my car. I guess they feel as if it was safe on the other side of road, and want to return to that safety?  ??? And often you see one run for it, only to be followed by 1-2-3 or more. I guess we just have to take our chances? :-*

Yes...It did,  two occasions...The idea is they hear you and stop.  It was only the ones I could see and who knows the ones I didn't see.  At any rate,  I invite you to research this on the Internet.  The claims are that the simple whistles are not as effective.  $15.00 (Hopkins) or $30.00 (911AA or AA911
in Noblesville IN) have some reasonable data.  My deer encounter was $1,400.00 + the damage to the
on-coming 1965 restored Mustang.  True,  they may not be the complete answer,  but it also may command someone's attention who may be turning left or pulling over into your lane,  or walking in front of Wal Mart.

Urbestfriend,
As soon as I get the XC500 out of the shop I'm going to buy it, (the Hopkins). I will try anything to
prevent what happened a month ago. It was the most terrifying event of my life and the closest I have ever come to being killed. The only thing that saved my life is that I am a strong 100% beleiver
in ATGATT and I was wearing all my safety gear. Even thought the coat, pants, gloves, and helmet were all shredded they did the job. But I digress. Thanks so much for your help and enthusiasm for the product. That's what I love about this forum. Someone out there always has viable information,
we become friends, and have no idea what we look like! Thanks,
Mike

Sorry Vivo, not familiar with that name. Does not mean that I don't know him. I have former patients walk up to me and greet me when I'm out and about and I can't remember their name.
Really embarassing. Any other info you can share on Mr. Kirk might jog my old forgetful mind.
