ZX50?
« on: June 17, 2012, 08:16:29 PM »
Anyone know much about the 04-05 ZX50's? Have an opportunity to pick one up for cheap, but was wondering about top speed reliability and availability of parts?

ZX is a great scooter. I had the same questions before I bought mine. My 1st ZXx, 2nd Kymco. Aftermarket parts for the engine are abundant because the Honda Dio uses the same engine. OEM parts are available.

Top speed? Not really sure. Mine is bone stock and goes about 40mph. I weigh about 270 lbs though.

Guess this thing is worth checkin out then. It's not running right now but has been sitting for a while and ran fine last te he used it he says. He thinks it's just the sparkplug or something. But I might be able to steal it of everything checks out and can get it running. Been lookin for a 2 stroke, those suckers fly. Kinda worries me though, with the constantly burning pistons up comment earlier, I don't like replacing pistons.

Definitely worth checking out. I bought mine in a very similar situation. Guy said it didn't run and he thought it might need a spark plug or something. I got mine for $125 and pretty much had to snatch it quick. One guy called about it while I was standing there looking at it  :D. Had low mileage but plastics were in pretty rough shape. Try and find out how long it's been sitting. Any more than 6 months the fuel system will need to be flush/cleaned. You can use that to bargain. You should have seen the gas I drained out of the tank. Rotten gas also has a distinct varnish smell. Turn the engine over slowly with the kick start feeling the compression of the engine. I had hoped zombie would have replied to your post by now. He knows a lot more about the ZX than me. Let us know if you have any more questions/concerns.

Thanks for the props guys!
The basic stuff... OEM it will do 40-45 for several years before needing a piston/rings. It's a pretty strong OEM set up. meaning the parst are robust enough to last. In 4 years of owning mine it has been thru several incarnations. Oem jug, and a set of secondary gears, it will run 50mph all day long.
Malossi sport/gears/pipe it will do 55-60 for a few miles, and you will feel the power fall off to 50 where you can cruise.
Do some porting, and add a GOOD pipe (next RSII) and 65-70 is reachable adding a good Var, and clutch.
Go NUTS, and spend 4k on all sorts of goodies, and 80 is easy. I'm not done installing bits yet but I have a goal of 90mph.
The frame needs work to run over 60 but nothing crazy... the brakes can be upgraded using either Agility, or S9 calipers, and Malossi pads. It is a HEAVY bike at 200lbs, and Most of the weight is in the front 1/2 of the bike so it feels real stable in corners, and I have scraped the side plastics around 45-50 mph in the past. I like it.
There is NO limit to the parts you can get. I have a new 87cc water cooled cylinder kit for another ZX engine to try out. You cant get these for any other Kymco. Polini/Malosi both offer top shelp race rep kits for the engine, and I have sources for some of the best power pipes on earth for these.
My bike cost 300.00 in Mint used condition. I have seen them selling for 600-800 local.
If you want an everyday commuter it is a good choice, and if you want to leave your balls at the stop light it can be done.
