Carburetor issues
« on: June 25, 2012, 09:32:21 AM »
Well, my scoot just crossed the 1k mark and started having carburetor issues.  The dealer fixed it, it is still under warranty, but 2nd day out on it and it died again.  It feels like the same problem (same response, symptoms etc...).  Apparently there is a rod in the carburetor that controls how much fuel goes in when on throttle.  Something keeps letting it move out of position so no fuel when throttle is applied.  The engine bogs down and stutters... this time I even got a little bit of back firing at full throttle.  The dealer said he added a spring to prevent it from coming out of position, which may the reason why I was able to limp it home at 10 mph.  Anyone else have this problem?  Anyone have ideas on how to prevent it? Any ideas on what caused it?  I intend to use that warranty while I still have it but at some point I will be doing this work myself... I may be doing this work in the middle of the night at some point if the cause doesn't find a solution...

The dealer has ordered a new part since it's covered under warranty.  He hasn't seen this issue before either though.

I opened up my carb today and was surprised to find a 102 main jet with a 35 pilot jet. I put in a 110 because it was running lean and lacked power at WOT, we'll see if runs any better.

The only rod is one that the float pivots on, it's knurled on one end to keep it captive, so if it's loose it may jam the fuel inlet with the needle valve.

You can check to see if all the vac lines are attached, there's one on the bottom of the carb from the fuel vapor recovery cannister, if it's off or leaking , the engine can't run.

What you're describing sounds like the slide needle. It does control the mid range throttle. The float pin has no way of coming out when the bowl is attached.

The dealer replaced the "lock ring" that keeps the needle in place.  Its run 3 days now with no problems.  Its surprisingly easy to get to and I have a light tucked under the seat now "just in case".
