Speedometer Cable

Took off after work today and noticed the speedometer didn't budge and the odometer didn't turn on my People 150.  I'm guessing this is a broken speedometer cable but I have no experience with this.  Is there an easy was to verify that this is the problem?  Thanks!

Spin off the retainer at the wheel, and pull out the core. It will be a flattened out "square" at both ends if it is whole. My ZX will stop reading from time to time so I just smack down on it, and it always comes back.

Thanks Z.....spun off the retainer at the wheel,  pulled on the outer cable and found the problem instantly.  The inner cable had snapped off about an inch from the wheel.  Surprised to see that the inner cable was not metal but was made out of some kind of plastic :-\.  Now just have to figure out how to get the broken end out from the wheel.  The cable in the wheel has a screw gear on the end of it that meshes with a plastic gear that turns with the wheel.  The screw gear and plastic gear sit in a housing that fits in the wheel hub.  Not sure how to get the screw gear out of that housing.  It looks like there is a tiny set screw on the side of the housing that is holding the screw gear in but my smallest hex wrench was too big to fit it.  Upon further examination, I do not think it is a set screw but one of those cylindrical "pins" that are split along its length (not sure what those are called).  It is only about 1/16" in diameter and doesn't extend through the other side of the housing, so you can't punch it out.  Does this sound like something that has to be drilled out?  The parts list shows the housing as a separate part from the cable, so I'm guessing the two should come apart some how.  Any ideas out there?  Thanks.

I've never had one apart on a scoot. If it is a roll pin that would mean it is permanent. That makes no sense. You will have a hell of a time drilling it because they are spring steel. A Cobalt bit will work... but I think there is another way. The tiny end may fish out with a heavy needle. Maybe heat one up, and jam it in the broken end? Let it cool, and it should pull it out.
