Fuel guage

Does anyone have any problem with the fuel guage?

Yeah it reads half when it's full, and sometimes I can hear the float clanking in the tank. It's pretty unreliable and I bet it's the sending unit down in the tank. If it wasn't such a hassle to pull off all the plastic to fix it, I might try harder, but for now it's OK.

I think this is a common problem on the X.

Remove the 6" square access cover on the hump.
You may find easier access to the tank than you thought.

When my needle hits the top of the red, meaning empty, it takes exactly 2 USA gallons to fill it. This means at empty I still have 1.38 gallons left.

For me, half means approximately 1/3.

How hard can it be? On all CN/TW bikes I have owned it has always been the same issue. Just read the trip meter and stop for fuel when it gets to your critical point.

Europe has higher octane (spelling) than the US market, could make some difference in mpg.

My low fuel light comes on at about 140 miles or so. Also, this is when my needle touches the little peg that it rest on, meaning I am just about out of gas.

Mine is fairly accurate.  It reads past full when full, half tank in the middle, and runs out just short of the end of the red (about as far below the white bars as it goes past them when full).  I think the people that assemble the tanks may bend the sending units when getting them into the tanks.  The gauge on my Vstrom was pretty wild - but as you filled the tank up it went from skinny, to wide, to skinny, to really wide...

Gonna remove the tank unit and calibrate it this winter. Hope it is a flotation device, much easier.

I agree my fuel gauge isn't accurate either...fuel light comes on right before the red line. I will ride for another 20miles before I get nervous and fill up. But when filling up I will add 2.5-2.7 gallons and it is full, up to the cap...So does the tank really hold 3.2 gallons???

2009 xciting new to me 2 weeks ago has a minor fuel gauge issue. It appeared my fuel light went on. It was accurate I was out of gas.   I refilled light stayed lit.  A couple of quick high angle sweeping turns and voila. Gas gauge works again.   Put gas in next time and reset trip meter. Gauge stops working. Speed bump in parking lot works again.

None of my previous scooters has had an accurate gas guage - not the Vespa or the Burgman. My old school Harleys didn't have a gas guage at all.  I got into the habit of simply filling up every 100 miles. IMHO filling up every 100 miles serves as a good stopping point to rest and check things out and you know how much to put in each time so no worry about pump equipment and potential overflow.

I find myself putting gas in the last scoot 2007 xc 250 and current scoot 2009 xc 500 ri  every 110-120 miles around 2 gallons of gas.  When on two wheels if it's on the bike I want it to work.  I will allow a more idiosyncratic experience with 4 wheels.
