Using oil tank as a 2nd fuel tank
« on: August 18, 2012, 06:54:57 PM »
I've really been thinking about this lately. Sometimes I ride long distances and have to carry fuel with me. Not only is it dangerous it's a pain in the ass to make room for it under the seat. So first I was thinking about using it as sort of a reserve tank with a 2 way valve. But, I'm having trouble finding a 2 way valve to use with these tiny fuel lines. I also don't like this idea because the gas in the oil tank would get old unless I used it up every once in while.

So I've been doing some research on the web. I found something interesting on a jet ski forum. One guy has done this on a few skis. He says you take the vent from the fuel tank and connect it to the bottom of the oil tank(with premix gas in it of course) and the oil tank has its own vent. So as the fuel in the main tank drops, it draws in more gas from the oil tank. The oil tank will run out first but that's ok. Only problem with this is I don't think my people has a vent line. The cap is the vent.

The other option I have considered is finding a Y fitting and just connecting the main tank, the oil tank, and the line to the fuel filter all together. This would be more convenient because the oil tank would fill as the main tank is filled.

What do you guys think?
