New to the board with New Like 200i
« on: October 05, 2012, 07:13:37 AM »
Greetings -
I'm another older fella who just had to get back on some form of two wheels. In Feb I purchased a SYM Fiddle 50 a 2009 left over, and while it was fun, I needed a bit more speed (living out in a rural area, my 25 mph area was limited). So last month I traded it in on a Kymco Like 200i 2012 model.
So far I am enjoying the new found freedom of being able to hit 60 mph and go where I please.
The fit and finish seem very nice - having a top box for extra storage is nice.
The 12' wheels make for a better ride than the 10" wheels on the SYM.
One thing I do not care for is the kick stand - it seems a bit to upright, not enough lean - thus I use the center stand, not big deal, but a bit of an annoyance.
Plus one other annoyance is that I read through the warranty and I see they "require" that a Kymco dealer or "equally qualified service facility for inspection, maintenance, services and adjustments according to the Periodic Maintenance chart contained in the owner's manual." So I guess in order to keep a two year warranty I will have to "pay" for service rather than do my own oil changes and valve adjustments, etc - - - i rather like doing my own stuff (part of the hobby, in my opinion) - - - thus just for the record has anyone who does their own maintenance had a problem collecting on the warranty?
Anyways - that is all I have for now.

I do my own maintenance ever since and I don't care about the warranty... If something breaks under warranty, I'll just buy the parts... it's cheap... cheaper than skipping work and paying for other stuff... I have 11,000 on the odometer and the scoot's smoother than ever...

If it's a car, that's another story....

I had a 2012 Like 200i and had no one but the dealer do my initial service. I also was concerned with warranty. After three attempts to repair a service engine light Kymco stepped in and issued me a brand new 2013 scooter. I have since made a trade for the People GTI 200.
So...... If you don't care about cost and feel you want to sacrifice one year of complete coverage and two years on the engine then get the tools out.
I think the basic oil  and gear oil change are fine. I have the dealer do the initial service and then change my own fluids every other time and document all service.
Congratulation on the scooter I loved that scooter for the time I owned it.

Thanks for the input - - -
I'll probably compromise on the service and let the dealer do the first three and then take over from there - - -

Congratulations on the purchase of your Like. It's loads of fun. I love riding the back country roads where I live.

I thought the manufacturer required the 200 and 600 mile service to be performed by the dealer to keep you in the warranty. After that you should be able to do your own service as long as you document your work and keep all the reciepts for parts.

If you are wondering why the maintenance section of your owners manual has a 200 mile service requirement, I can only guess, but may be they put in cheap oil for the break-in period. I skipped the 200 mile service and brought it in at 600 miles.
