Maintenance Lesson

The 300i requires only 6 ounces of synthetic gear oil, but does anyone know what happens if you fill the transmission with 15 ounces of synthetic gear oil, instead of just the 6 ounces required?

I believe there is a vent for it and you'll get some leaking when you run it. It could also
create a leak into the clutch area. (I've heard of that happening on other scoots)

If you haven't run it (or no leaks have shown up) just drain it out and start over.

In the old days you filled til it came out the fill hole, it was simple and easy. Now you
have to track down a manual and find a graduated cylinder. These modern engineers
just don't think ahead! Or maybe the manufacturer wants you to bring it to the dealer
for service for $$$?

I ran it for about 250 miles, and thats when I noticed leaking and dripping after the bike was parked.  I didn't notice any difference in the performance of the transmission, just leaking about 1/2 ounce each time I parked it for longer than an hour. 

I drained it today, and refilled 6 ounces.  My concern is whether a seal or gasket might have blown, because of higher pressure caused from the excess oil? 

I would hope there is an overflow hose, or pressure relief valve (vent), that allows excess oil to drain off?

There is a seal on the shaft the clutch rides on. You should be able to change it easy
enough if necessary but I would run it for a while and see if it still leaks (maybe open
it up and clean the oil out from under the CTV cover).

I haven't ridden it since I corrected the fill level, but it's still leaking, hopefully just whatever had already overflowed from before.  I'll take it for a ride tonight, and over the weekend, and hopefully the leaking tapers off.

What Randy said. I overfilled my Yager "transmission" way back and I had oil everywhere. Finally got smart and put in the right amount and waited a LONG TIME, MANY MILES before the slime on the back wheel stopped. Be patient, keep cleaning the back wheel and it will go away.

  One other thing to check is the air filter,  the oil flows everywere,  my filter was soaked with oil , plus every thing at the rear end,  300i DT.

Thanks Karl: I think you're correct, that the oil drip will fade, because it has already tapered down to just a few drops.  It seems that this was a "minor" lesson in the art of scooter maintenance, and I hope that others learn from my mistake.

DeDe:  Thanks for the heads up; I checked the air filter, and there was a small amount of oil inside the air box.  I removed the air box, and submersed it in warm soapy water to remove all traces of dirt and oil.  The air filter seemed ok, but I did notice that soot particles tend to collect at the front of the air filter, where the intake duct deposits air.  This is a concern, because I spent $100 to import (Italy) a DNA high performance reusable air filter, and soot particles may reduce the lifespan of the filter.  So, I'm thinking to tape some cheese cloth over the DNA air filter, to trap the soot particles before they reach the air filter.  I will install the DNA filter at 3,000 miles. 

I cleaned the underneath of the scooter, and reinstalled the air filter box.  The service manual I have says that you must remove several body parts in order to access the filter box.  That is not true.  There are 8 screws, with one screw that is difficult to access, but it's not much of a problem.

The leak stopped within 24 hours of draining the transmission to the proper level.  I've ridden about 150 miles since I leveled the fluid properly, and there is only a small amount of fluid collecting on the underneath of the transmission. 

Be careful not to overfill the transmission!!!
