Does anyone really follow this??
« on: December 30, 2012, 04:01:37 AM »
I was reading through the Owners Manual (2012 Super 8 150) and am interested how many folks actually follow their advise by not riding over 1/2 throttle for the first 300 miles?  I can see not running it WOT for extended periods of time, but does anyone really follow this?

P S . the reason for the hill run is to get full compression on the down hill run and WOT . on the up hill run ,. tryed to keep RPM below 7,500 ,. the top of the hill was 1 mile to turn around and bottom of the hill 1/2 mile to turn around,.

You'd have to have a lot of patience to stay below 1/2 throttle for 300 miles!

Some vehicles I've broken in felt "tight" a DR350 comes to mind. On that bike I
rode around accelerating and decelerating holding the rev's below the point it
got tight and rev'ed past the tight point a little bit each ride. It might have red
lined at 9000 and the tight point was 5000 to begin and slowly it pushed higher
and higher.

The problem is localized heating. A tight point will get super hot which can cause
glazing and seizing. The goal is to heat cycle and machine the irregularities off the
surfaces without any glazing or seizing.

My new Yager never felt tight but from the looks of the oil it did a lot of machining
in the first 100 miles....

I followed the owner's manual for break-in with my Xciting 250...1/2 throttle for X miles and then 3/4 throttle for next X miles.  I now have just over 2K miles and she purrs....no tight spots, no hesitation...she accelerates well and I'm pleased with the performance.  Yes it was a little aggravating at times and I likely went over the recommended throttle at times for brief periods, but the results have been great.

...rode it over 55,000kms before it had any real issue...

The Kymco Xciting was my only new scoot and I didn't followed exactly, but of course the big engine needs >50% throttle only occasionally. Driving warm (ca. 5 miles) with an eye at the tachometer and then go as desired. It's reaching 30k miles now without any engine issues.
