Rear wheel removal
« on: February 06, 2013, 07:06:13 PM »
Hi guys, been away a while!

Daughters rear tyre is getting low and she's also having issues with the back stepping out, have been quoted for a new tyre but it includes £30 for the wheel removal and refit so looking to save that £30! Is it as simple as removing the exhaust and then the centre nut and taking it off (possibly backing off the brake first)?

yes you have to remove the exhaust first. some times the whell nut is very tight, you will need a impact wrench or a lever with a big wrench. when you get it off, then you loosen the brake cable.

all the best! ;)

Cheers, I will be deploying my Breaker Bar then!

I presume the rear wheel bearing comes apart in the process or does it come off whole?

It comes off whole, with the bearing left in. I also had to loosen off my rear mudguard too to get it off. Pain in the hole really, they couldve made it a whole lot easier. Seems crazy to have to remove the exhaust etc but you do, never had to do it on any other scooter i owned.
Chaos is my co-pilot.

Thanks for that....no experience of any other Scoots but the exhaust takes all of 5 minutes (once it's cool!) and been off a few times recently so should be easy enough! I always copperease the fixings!

As a Scotsman you'll no doubt understand the incentive to save £30 by DIYing the wheel removal ;-)

Yeah, i got quoted £50 wheel to change a tyre if i took the whole scoot in, or £30 per tyre if i took just the wheel in. Ended up finding a small local guy who did it for £10 per wheel if i dropped off the wheels and new tyres. Some places are just a total rip-off.

Dead done, wheel off in 5 minutes (not sure whether the snow meant I was faster or slower!), £35 for a new tyre, back on in 3 minutes!

Very good.  You don't sound like a rookie.  Half inch here in S Jersey.  How much did you get?

Less than a 1/4", I have a sheet of corrugated plastic I use to lie on, so kept fairly dry while popping the exhaust nuts off at the head, used the rear brake adjuster to lock up the back wheel while I cracked the big nut off.  Do lots of work on cars and bikes (of the human powered variety) so tools is not an issue!
