Flood insurance?
« on: May 01, 2013, 01:41:51 PM »
Question... Can one flood a fuel injected, 2012 Xciting w/abs?

3 times the scoot has been difficult to start.

1.  The first time was after it was trailered 600 miles.  The next day it started right up but then died.  It eventually started but it took a while.  I smelt fuel.  It probably had 1/2 a tank of gas in it.

2.  For time #2, it had been driven hard and put away wet (so to speak).  When I tried to start it, it wouldn't right away.  Again, I smelt fuel.  It had been refuled about 20 miles prior.

3.  Finally, for time #3, I started it in the morning on the center stand.  With the engine running I took it off the center stand and then needed to do something.  I just kicked out the side stand to prop up the scoot.  Of course, the engine died.  I immediately tried to restart it and had difficulty.  Like the above times, it eventually started.  I smelt gas.  There was probably less than 1/2 a tank of gas in it.

I didn't think it was possible to flood a fuel injected vehicle but the fact that I smell fuel leads me to believe otherwise.  The scoot has a little over 14000 miles on it and was given the BIG service about a month or so ago.

It doesn't happen enough to be a real concern.  Mostly, I was just curious....

What say you all?

Don in KC.

Probably your charcoal canister getting flooded with liquid fuel while refueling. There's a hose you
can remove to prove if that's the problem but I don't know where it is on your scoot...

My 09 Xciting 500ri will not start when it is cold. It stranded me downtown after work even after I pulled the spark plug which was wet with fuel, and even after I cranked it without the plug in it was blowing out fuel spray.

I had to wait til it warmed up outside before I could get it home, but above 50 degrees it starts fine.

My buddy said the 02 sensor probably doesn't have a heater element because Kymco didn't think anyone would ride at 20 degrees outside.

I'd like to know if there's a way to adjust the fuel enrichment for cold weather, but haven't found anything so far.

My carbureted '06 500 X doesn't have this problem, so I'm sure it's the injection.

I've been riding my Yager at 30F latelty. So it seems to be OK with the fuel injection.

On some bikes, if the dealer has the factory programmer they can tweek the fuel
+- some amount to allow for some variation between bikes. Not sure if Kymco's
have that?

Check the service manual and perform "Initializing TPS and ISC". Throttle Position Sensor and Idle Speed Control. ISC may be called Idle bypass valve or Air bypass valve. Some of these bikes need this on delivery and don't get it at the dealer (surprise!) in my opinion.

I have a 2009 XC 500 RI. I turn the key and wait a second. I can hear the fuel injection. The only time it doesn't work is after I use the side stand.  I am not a fan of side stands when a center stand is available.
I wish I could ride more and drive less!

Thank for eveyone's input.  I'm leaning towards something in the charcoal cannister system.  That seems to make the most sense.
