Electrical q....
« on: April 30, 2013, 07:07:56 AM »
OK, so I have an agility 50 that I'm prepping for sale to a friend. It starts just fine on the kick but it doesnt charge beyond minimal levels (not enough to use the electric start even after half an hours running) and its looking to me like the battery is not holding a charge any more - fair enough it's a 4 year old battery so no worries replacing it. however, I was wondering about it and put a meter on the connections with the battery disconnected.

I'm showing zero resistance between the battery wiring connections as soon as the key switch and kill switch are on,  I'm thinking I've probably got a short in there that's actually draining the battery while the thing is running. What's the most likely location of a short to ground in the agility wiring harness? I know I'm gonna have to take off all the tupperware and trace every piece of it to make sure but if there's a most common location of electrical issues like this I'd sure be glad to know it to save me some time..

For what it's worth, it starts fine on the kickstarter, runs just fine thereafter. Jumping it, it will start on the electric start with no issues and run without problems, but the old battery in there will never charge enough to turn it over.

The real question I'm asking, I guess, is this: Does this look like an old dead battery or a wiring short or both to you guys? I've no problems replacing the battery given its age but I just get real suspicious of any circuit that shows open as soon as the switches are turned on.

Test the battery... on the center stand, start the engine... at idle, volts should be around12.5-13.0... now rev the engine... volts should increase to 13.5 to 14.... If not, battery is not charging...

search for the Innova Battery Meter.  $12/15 dollars.  You can tell if you're charging or not due to increase in voltage with RPM.  Has a digital read out.   In your case and my Agility 50 experience,  I would suspect a battery that old.

I replaced the battery anyway. It's old enough and the replacement cheap enough.

I wouldn't be happy selling it to a friend, who I know has limited means, without getting it into as decent a condition as I can first. I can afford to swallow the cost of a few parts and the time to work on it. He can't.

First check with my meter showed 14.7v when lightly revving it so I'm thinking that battery age was indeed the culprit.
