Scooter batteries

Hello everyone:

I was at my local scooter dealership here in Vegas and I spoke to the mechanic about the battery. Temps have already reached into the extreme one teens. I ask the mechanic about the life of the batteries for the bikes and he told me they could last up to 4 year which impressive for the desert. I always thought it was the hot dry sun which destroys batteries, but it is not. He told me it is not keeping the batteries fluids up to date. My mechanic told me that everyone less their batteries dry out. This is why one is lucky if any battery really lasts beyond 2 years. I am so happy I purchased a better and more reliable scooter then my previously Chinese bike.

How true that is. I have a battery that I add water to and its keeping the starting cracks up.
you can also add battery acid to it its only 10 bucks at meijer. I have a small deepcycle also that works great and its acid free. if ya go deepcyle it has to be big enough to crank the scoot over.

Kymco's OEM batteries are typically maintenance free, so I do not know how this mechanic tops them up with fluid... did he ever do a repair of Kymco scooter?

Hey, that's the lead that came hooked to the battery on my new LIKE 200i.
Cool......however, the best trickle charger is my rear-end in the seat with some BP 93 in the tank going down the street, rain or shine, every 8 > 12  hours.

Kymco OEM battery brands differ from place to place.  Some maintenance free batteries have caps on top, under the sticker brand. Remove sticker and pry out the plastic caps to top them with fluid.

My mechanic works on all the quality scooters. He works on the Kymcos, Syms, Lance, Genuine and all major scooter brands. Him and the owner own the dealership from where I purchased my scooter.

Kymco's OEM batteries do not have acid solution inside, they are dry gel batteries. The caps are there just because the casing is the same regardless of the type (acid or maintenance free) and I agree it is misleading. The best way to destroy Kymco's OEM battery (with caps) is to remove that cap and add distilled water inside.

Kymco clearly claims in the manual that the batteries are maintenance free but removable caps are clearly misleading.  (and useless, too).

I believe my dealer gets absorbent glass mat (AGM) type sealed lead acid batteries. They come empty with a pack of acid stored separately. The cap strip is there to allow filling of the initial acid solution in the battery prior to first charge. That way, you get a fresh battery and not one that is stored activated for an unknown period of time before you get it. The strip isn't meant to be pried open after the initial fill for refilling though.

Sometimes the non-sealed lead acid batteries have a clear casing with marks on the side, so you know when to refill them.

Kymco OEM batteries here are not dry gel batteries... they are supplied by a local supplier... they are labelled maintenance free but actually are acid type...

Scooters are assembled here and not completely built units from Taiwan... that's the reason they are cheaper... they are imported without the batteries....
