10,000 Miles .... issues and observations
« on: July 27, 2013, 12:03:36 AM »
Had a previous post but thought I would start a new one.  Ok, scoot is running kinda of slow, felt like belt was slipping especially at initial acceleration from stop.

Pulled the covers and looked at the var-clutch-belt stuff.  First off the entire area was very clean, I was amazed.  Both pulleys look almost new, no marks or scuffs or ridge build-up.  I did not measure belt wear but I did observe at idle the belt would make a whup-whup sound and was moving from side to side on the front pulley.  I am ordering a new belt (probably put it on at 12-14k miles, will also order a new clutch spring or possibly upgrade with a slighty stronger spring.

Re-checked the air cleaner since I had earlier noticed oil being sucked into it from the rear drive.  I vacumned the air filter, removed some of the black oil from the surface.  Will order a new spare but will only replace when I think the old one is done.

So, the bike was running a little smoother, also I was now rolling on the throttle deliberately from a stop.  This was Ok, but my old top end speed was usually 6,000 rpm for 60 mph and 7,000 rpm for 70mph, now it was taking more rpms to reach speed.   Hmmm.

I replaced the standard CR7E plug with a CR7EIX (iridium).  The old plug had just a tiny speck of metal left where the ground anode was supposed to be, so much for requiring correct spark plug gap, (lol).

Now back to 6,000 rpm for 60 mpg ... etc.

have you measured your belt ,. size is 1004 mm.x 25.2 mm. with a 30 degree angle,. measure with a tailors tape around the outside of the belt,  my original belt was 1010 mm. and I had slippage, high rpm. and the belt is 24 mm. wide it would not get into high gear,.           I now have the belt riding to the top of the variator ,  you can run up the engine on the stand, with the cover off,the variator,  so you can see whats happening,.  this is what started me on sliders and over sized wt.s, and that does not work!  only good for high speed,. lousy for take off,.  I have been taking notice my happy speed is between 45 and 60 mph.  on back roads,.      2011 300i downtown givi wind shield raised seat no but stop,. wojo horn iridium plug  grinded the side stand so it would swing forward farther, after it fell of coarse,. my golden hawk is looking very white with new tupperware,( comes that way,)  all that is left is the front fender,.  that is gold, Me,,, new hips and a kick in the butt to get me moving  ,.  80 years and still riding, up to 32,000 km.  thats 20,000 miles

Thanks for the belt info.   Ordered parts from gearhead.com

Yep, I agree 60 mph is a happy spot in the rpm range, but at times I am on the interstates and 75 is a safer speed.

yes interstates at rush hour through the city, some times 80 is safer,  I stay in the passing lane to keep out of the weaving nuts on the road,.  it s mostly bumper to bumper ,  I have ridden around the city in the country just to keep away from the nuts on the road,. the older I get, the more I notice them,

Just looked in the handy-dandy pdf service manual for drive belt info and found NOTHING about wear limit for the drive belt and NOTHING about new part dimensions. I saw Dee-dee's dimensions and wonder where you got that. I don't think I need one yet but would like to have stuff "nailed down" before it is a problem.

The Downtown 300i service manual simply says replace drive belt at 20 000 km or when the belt has noticeable damage, whichever comes first.

My Bet and Win 250 uses the same belt, and I replaced mine at 20 000 km as well. The B&W 250 service manual says a new belt is 23.6-24.4 mm when new, and the service limit is 22.0 mm. When I replaced my belt at 20 000 km, it was at or slightly past the service limit.

I had 22,000 km. on my belt,. and it still looked new,.  when I was playing with the Wts. sliders,   I put the belt back on as I shaved the variator face 1mm. on both sides, and my rpm dropped 500 to 1000 rpm at higher speeds, I ride with a new belt on board,.  I check the belt every oil change, still looks new,
