200 mile maintenance
« on: June 20, 2013, 08:48:12 PM »
I scooted around 75 miles yesterday and did some of the 200 mile maintenance.  The oil was good to change and the strainer has some aluminum ...flakes but not like flaked off.  looked more like a piece or two from molding.  So that is good to get that stuff out of the engine.  I changed the tranny gear lube.  That was as clean as it gets.  It looked like I dumped gear lube out of a brand new container in to the used oil barrel.  I couldn't find any loose bolts.  The steering bearings still feel as tight as new so I didn't do anything there.  Then there is the valve clearance issue.  I can't believe it needs adjusting yet.  I think I will get a few more miles on it.  Maybe 400 miles then do the check.  The engine was too hot do a good check anyway.

If the valves are out of adjustment you will likely hear it or notice a rough idle, etc.  I waited until 2500 miles before I checked my valves and only the upper one was a teeny bit off.  If you don't notice any problems, it isn't THAT big of a deal to check it right away.

It is normal to find flakes in the engine oil on the first change, not so much on subsequent changes.  The gear oil will be darker next time you change it due to the difference in miles between changes.  On your next oil change you can switch to synthetics if you want.  I switched at the 600 mile mark to synthetic oils.

Ride safe and enjoy your scooter.

Thanks SonicSix.  I am thinking along those lines.
