cutting sliders to fit my scooter
« on: June 22, 2013, 04:47:30 AM »
My order of Dr. pulley sliders will be in tomorrow I will pick them up in massena NY.  has any one modified the size of the sliders to make it fit your scooter,. I have to take 6 mm. off the side to make them fit,  the downtown size is 20/12 x 15.5 grams   the sliders coming in are 23/ 18 X 24 grams,. I have one place in Ottawa on. that has a water jet cutting system,. if that does not work Ill have to send them out of town, for a plasma cutter,. any ideas anyone???

Can you not get sliders in the correct size to fit your scoot? I guess you could cut them to fit just using a small hacksaw blade but then how will you know the weight? Unless you have a set of those small electronic scales (normally used by drug dealers)? I picked up a set last year off Fleabay to weigh out my roller centres for under 2 bucks from China.  You really will be just guessing the weight of the cut sliders if you can weigh them and if the weight is way off then your scoot will prob run worse than you hoped for, the difference even 0.5-1g per slider/roller makes can have a big improvement or loss in performance, at least on my scoot anyway.

I am trying something differant ,. instead of changing the ramps in the variator,. a differant size slider could work, and do the same thing,.  hopefully it will work at lower rpm.  will let you know when I get them cut to size,.

I know when i had a brand new set of rollers laying about that were too heavy to use i tried to drill out a little from the brass centres and they just came apart, imagine the same thing will prob happen with the sliders if you were to cut them. No harm in trying tho if you already paid for them i guess.

I'd try a fixed belt sander, you just have to hold them somehow. And take off from the
side with the exposed metal. I've used mine for all sorts of fitting and tuning. You will
loose the lower ratios and shift the whole range upward. Of course the sliders will give
you back some low end so it might work out fine.

because of the plastic and metal in the sliders I cannot use heat ,.  thats why Im looking at water jet cutting. at 60,000 lb.s preasure,. no heat ,.   and very acurate in there cuts.

The sliders are a weight covered in plastic, if you cut too much plastic the metal will be
able to rub in the variator so they won't slide well.

The Dr. Pulley website shows a video were they put the slider weights into hot water, and that makes the surrounding plastic material pliant enough that one can  slide the metal weight out. So you could cut the plastic, then cut the weight separately so it's just a tiny bit narrower than the plastic. Put the plastic back in the hot water to make it pliant again, and slide the metal weight back in so it's centered.

Of course, you could just contact Dr. Pulley in Taiwan and have them custom-make a set of weights for you. That's what I'm doing. My wife's in Taiwan right now, so she'll pick them up and bring them home with her.

if I knew Dr. pulley did custom sliders, I would have ordered them and not have the hassle trying to get work done by machine shops,. in canada. they have no interest at all,.  Ill have to move over to live with Vivo,.  but I could not handle the traffic,.  reminds me of rush hour in Montreal Que. canada.

Eh, my wife contacted Dr. Pulley, since she's been in Taiwan visiting family for the past 4 1/2 months. I wanted her to order 20x15 19.5 gram sliders, six of them. Dr. Pulley told her they no longer do custom jobs. Apparently too much trouble for just one set of them.

So, I'll have my wife order the heaviest they've got, and I'll add weight to them myself.

I got my sliders back yesterday, sized 23/12 16.5 grams,.  a little to heavy,  so I grind a little off,. to 15.9 grams,. I am hogging out a little from the variator,. to keep rpm  down, loosing newtral ,.  I may have to get stronger springs to keep clutch in,. going for a little ride soon, to see how it works at speed,.

At 16 grams take off was chug  chug  lousy  ,. back in the garage take the sliders apart, the brass center comes out easy, and grind them seperatly,  I smoothed the nylon part and grind the brass center part checking Wt. all the time,.  right on 14 grams,.  put them together and install,.   take off much better but clutch locks to soon,  when you get in the power band it go,s  like a bat out of hell,.  up to 70 mph. then your rpm drops or stays the same to 85 mph.,  I find top end is lower by 10 miles ,  cant get into higher rpms for power,.  but crusing at 65 or 70 mph. rpm is at 6,000 rpm.  very nice!!!    I may try 13.5 grams tomorow,. I dont want to take the sliders apart to often,. I hate to think what would happen if they
came apart at 6,000 rpm,  Ill put a dab of lock tight blue for safty,.   ride safe  to you all   good night.
